I think he saw it as a fortuitous event to proclaim his SJW cred and get looks nationally. It sort of came out of nowhere (Brees' bible pitch) too much to be really "calculated" on Dunlap's part. Maybe when the national fawning wasn't as huge as he had hoped, he went to Plan B.
