Apparently it's a hot new trend.

quote:

Wedding website The Knot posed the question of whether it’s a good idea to split the cost, and the response was varied.

“I put money down on my ring,” said a respondent named Jessica. “My fiance and I have been together over 7 years now. We work together for what we want and need. We are a team.”

quote:

“Today, because both the man and woman earn money and contribute to the financials and the decision-making, it’s not surprising that both of them are involved in all aspects [of choosing and paying for the ring],” she told TODAY.com. “I think it makes for a better connection between the two people.”

So if they call off the engagement, who gets to keep (i.e. pawn) the ring?

AKA The only way Jessica was getting a ring was if she paid for it

I would rather just be given a moissanite ring.

My grandparents were poor when they got married and my grandmother didn't get an engagement ring. Later on when they got a little money my granddad didn't see any point in one since they were already married, so my grandmother bought one for herself.

How about instead of spending a shitload of money on a dumb ring, buy something more reasonable. Nobody will ever know the difference between a CZ and a diamond anyway.

Considering that my ex wife put in zero on her engagement ring and my future wife will get a ring worth at most half, I’d say it equals out

I didn’t get a ring when we got engaged - I didn’t want him to spend the money, we were very young

We do have wedding rings

20 years later, and i don’t regret not getting a diamond

I don't have a future wife, if this marriage breaks up, I'm not doing it again. The wife didn't go halfsies on the ring I proposed with, but she has upgraded her ring sets a few times on her own dime. The ring I gave her was about a .75 carat in an 18kt gold setting. The one she wears now is in white gold, with a diamond just shy of 2 carats.
