On 4 May 1917 the French launched an artillery bombardment targeting the two ends of the tunnel, sending up an observation balloon to get a sight on the north-facing slope.

For once their accuracy was formidable. A shell fired from a naval gun hit the entrance, triggering more explosions from ammunition that was stored there and sending a cloud of acrid fumes into the shaft. Another shell sealed the exit.

Inside, the men from the 10th and 11th companies of the 111th Reserve Regiment were trapped. Over the next six days, as oxygen ran out, they either suffocated or took their own lives. Some asked comrades to kill them.

Kinda surprised there is no talk of cannibalism

3 men were able to survive/be rescued

quote:

"Everyone was calling for water, but it was in vain. Death laughed at its harvest and Death stood guard on the barricade, so nobody could escape. Some raved about rescue, others for water. One comrade lay on the ground next to me and croaked with a breaking voice for someone to load his pistol for him."

Pretty amazing stuff. I'd like to see how it still looks in there. It's like a time capsule, albeit with lots of skeletons.

If they were calling for water and suffocating, then they likely hadn't gotten to starvation yet.

ETA: Article says 6 days til rescue. 6 days isn't nearly long enough to be eating other people.

I say remove the fallen and give them a burial instead of leaving them in place for research.

Pretty crazy to think about. Good read, thanks OP.

Interesting question about what to do with the site. Would imagine both countries will work to erect a memorial or at least some sort of marker there.

No way. Preserve it and open it to the public for viewing. Everyone likes to see a good ol’ fashioned dead body.

Maybe not for you, but I start feeling funny if I go an entire day without meat. 48 hours in that tunnel and I’m making a roux.

I don't think 6 days is long enough to start needing to eat human flesh. But that's just my opinion.

This is a slightly different situation than being on an island tho. They were trapped in a cave with people dying daily. I think if they had no food with them its a possibility. Maybe 6 days isnt quite long enough for their sanity to waiver to that point tho

That ground hasn't seen it's last battle, no matter how many monuments people put up.
