My biggest con is that many frat guys isolate themselves to other greeks. College should be a time where you challenge yourself and form your own set of ideals. Diversity in who you are around affects you beliefs and attitudes.
Groupthink is another con. wiki it if you don't know what I'm talking about.
Frats have many great aspects to them as well though! In a university as large as LSU, making connections without getting lost in the shuffle is difficult. Like everything in life you have to find balance.
My father in law is 60 years old and was a "fratboy" at LSU. He still sees his closest frat brothers nearly every week while hunting, fishing, golfing, or drinking. That connection is invaluable.
I'm a member of an adult organization that plays sports and socializes. I gladly pay dues because my experience with the club has paid me back tenfold through friendships, professional networking, and support in difficult life moments.

Yes you paid to have friends frickboy. They don't let any random person off the street go in the frat house. All the mixers and parties yall throw, you get to go to them because YOU PAID TO JOIN THEIR FRAT.
You went to college as a loser, got mommy and daddy buy you some male friends. That's pathetic
From a fellow GDI - please stop talking.

For most 18 year olds, this is the first time they are own their own.
Having a place to land and getting some guidance in a good pledge program can be invaluable to getting college off on the right foot.
Being a member of ANY campus organization is also helpful in gaining social capital which eases the exploration of campus life as you find what you want to do and who you want to be.
Greek Life is one of many great ways to start off in a new place and a new phase of life. Choose your path but don't be a child criticizing the path of others, or the jocks, the Ambassadors, the Christians, the Debate teaam or whoever's not in your "club".
Someone else's choice they are happy with is just as valid.
About the worse choice is to come to LSU and be a dorm rat because you'll miss so much that LSU has to offer.

Eh, I know a lot of guys that were in fraternities, and around senior year, they stopped hanging around the house so much, and had a close group of friends. I guess they get less isolated the older they get.
Sorority girls all seem to get tired of it after sophomore year, and a lot of them just stop doing all of the required shite, or barely do anything but pay dues

ol yea I spent my first 2 years at Blinn.....big deal? Do you think that's where it ended for me? lol. Those days are all over now obviously, but at least I had the ability to get recruited and play D1 sports. Don't be mad you had to pay to have friends.

quote:I was a D1 college athlete. We laugh at people from JUCO who say they were college athletes, because they try too hard on campus. Frat guys were cool though

ETA: We didnt actually laugh at JUCO guys. But we sure as well would have laughed at this try hard. He would have been the guy that would come up to us to tell us how good he was in JUCO and he is starting a "club" team and may later try out in the fall

ok, you do realize...their friends are also "kicking in" to the pot. The money doesn't go to the friends, so are they paid friends?
It's a fricking fund to pay for house/food/parties etc. No actives RECEIVE payment.
But, yeah, I'm sure your dorm room parties were awesome.
Exactly. If you're happy with your college reunion consisting of you and the ten guys from your wing of the dorm or the twenty guys you played intramural football with then great for you.
My preference is to meet up with the 50 guys that I lived with during college or the 200 guys that I drank with and played intramurals with or the 2,000 guys that I can call for business and they'll drop what they're doing to take my call.
I also like that I can meet a kid or some guy from out of state that was in my frat and have an immediate bond that comes from a shared experience.

I was a walk on in college, and a miserable one at that, kept around, in retrospect, probably only to have enough warm bodies for the real studs to humiliate
