here's a good write up about the event, this guy is usually on point with his articles..

LINK

quote:

An unusually RARE ice storm looks to be in the making for Southeast Louisiana, starting on Tuesday, 1/28, and especially picking-up Tuesday afternoon & all through Tuesday night, crippling travel & the motorways, and closing roads & bridges for many areas both north shore and south shore parishes alike.

If you have business & travel plans to tend to, like crossing bridges, or traveling great distances, get all your travel arrangements completed by Monday night, 1/27, because I assure you as I type this here today, there *WILL* be bridge closures and road closures starting Tuesday and continuing in to Wednesday, 1/28-1/29. Many travelling options will be cut-off by the ice accretion that builds on Tuesday afternoon throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The wintery precipitation will begin as soon as Tuesday morning, 1/28, and it is likely that you will begin to see travel routes cut-off, during the day Tuesday, so get your business & travelling on the motorways completed by Monday night.

quote:

1/2" to 3/4" ice with a 15-25 mph wind yields -->> "Numerous utility interruptions (power outages), with some damage done to feeder lines & equipment expected. Tree limb damage is excessive. Outages last for 1 - 5 days." Oooo, la-la! Something to live for!

What's the flight situation at BTR? You think the airport will close on Tuesday?

I'm just a nobody but GEAUX posted about early afternoon ... If you're flying early to mid morning I'd guess it's ok ... depending on weather where you're connecting or going directly.

I'm flying to Maryland tomorrow morning out of BTR and supposed to return Wednesday night. Going through ATL. I'm crossing my fingers I don't deal with any huge delay issues. Minor is expected and I can handle but I don't want to be delayed an extra day.

Why would Wednesday be a bad travel day? Looks like Tuesday is the worse day

I've been through ice storm in Tennessee before. They aren't a joke.

Yea, I remember in the Ice Storm of '94 in Memphis we lost power for 8 days I think. Lost phone service for 3-5 days.
If the Southshore is mostly an ice event, I'm glad to be out of town. High of 24 on Tuesday sounds better than an ice storm, in a city not prepared for one.

They kept the roads closed well into Saturday when the precipitation ended Friday afternoon.

This time there may be more ice and it won't be gone quickly on Wednesday with a high of 43.
