But you still don't explain *why*

Why would any parties agree to this? What did any one of the three (Smith, Rock, The Academy) parties have to gain from this? There is maybe an argument that the Oscar's gained being the focus of attention for a while, but it didn't improve their ratings last night and will be forgotten a year from now. No one will be tuning in 360+ days from now to see if someone slaps someone else.

"But they were both smiling after! That proves it's fake!"

Smith has every reason to smile smugly like that, he feels like he just punked a dude that's been talking shite about his wife for years on national TV and taught him a lesson. I don't know if any of you "it's fake" people have ever been in a fight or a verbal spat in front of a bunch of people, but if you feel like you've won you walk away smiling just like that.

If you're on the "got punked in front of everyone" side of it and feel extremely awkward (like Rock), you smile and act just like he did too. He clearly didn't know how to respond and was embarrassed, I would smile and try to play it off awkwardly in front of millions of people just like he did.

It's weird how this has drawn so many differing opinions and people really digging themselves in to their "side" against the other side, when it's something fairly simple that has the simplest explanation at face value. You have to twist and contort and make all sorts of deep conspiracies to not see exactly what it was, a dude slapping the shite out of another dude that made fun of his wife.

So you didn’t even know the awards were going to be on, yet you’re in the know regarding how the Academy works?

I know enough to know the damn thing is on a tape delay and that nothing you watch on TV is "live" which is evidenced by the fact that the profanity part of the festivities wasn't aired in the US.

It wouldn't have been any more difficult to cut the slap than it was to cut the profanity. I'm sorry that reality seems to upset you.

ETA: The reality of the matter is that real, fake, staged, or planned, the Academy wanted you and everyone else to see that slap. If they didn't, you wouldn't have seen it. They would have and could have made the cut 15 seconds longer and no one would have seen it.

I don't know how the foreign live feeds work, but if those have tape delays they could have been cut as well. I'm betting, though, that those countries don't have an FCC that fines broadcasters for profanity and not violence.

When's the last time you watched the Oscars?
Have you seen King Richard?
When was Chris Rock's last stand up Comedy Special or movie?

Have you seen any if the movies nominated?
What's the last movie you watched in a theater that wasn't a Marvel movie?

Nah, not really. All I did was agree with the sentiment that saying some shite about someone's wife might get you slapped.

And Chris Rock just ruined it:

He should have gone on Rogan this week and just shat all over Will and Jada Plinkett for a hour straight and then done a 10 minute bit on them. There is so much wonderful material to go after them. But he fricked it all up. We can’t have a good old fashioned feud these days. I remember when both Rogan and Ari Shaffir willingly got banned from the Comedy Store to destroy Carlos Mencia, and while they got banned, what happened to Carlos and what happened to Joe. Very disappointed in Chris Rock here.

EDIT: And Chris, everyone is well aware you are not friends with that family. What a fricking pussy. Should have capitalized on that, made it a major part of his next standup act, and gone out a legend.
