Hopefully your marriage is solid but having a child is one of the greatest joys of life.

I really hope you have a daughter. I would have never said that about myself a few years ago, but becoming a girl dad is the best thing that has happened to me.

Wisdom of Our Fathers

A must read...wish I'd read it earlier in my earlier parenting days. I did get it read in time. Know the most import thing you can do for your child is be engaged with them and give them your time. They don't raise themselves!

Congrats. When someone tells you to enjoy every minute with them when they are little because time flies it's the truth. My little girl is 3 and that's the fastest 3 years of my life so far. It's seems like we were just getting up in the middle of the night to feed not that long ago. I was scared to death when we found out we were having a girl but I wouldn't change a thing now. Something about picking her up from daycare and she runs up to you and jumps in your arms to hug you and says she's missed you will make the toughest mans heart melt.

Congratulations!

Once the child is born, the first the 3 weeks are frickin brutal. You're not sleeping, your wife is not sleeping and is hormonal as hell, your baby is learning how to do everything. It's a huge adjustment and you WILL get frustrated, annoyed, and even downright angry because you and your wife have to learn while sleep deprived and hormonal.

If you ever feel overwhelmed in a moment, walk away. It's ok. If you have dogs, put the baby in a safe spot and walk away for a minute or ask your wife to step in. You have to regain composure.

After 3 or so weeks, you get a hold of how to do things and your baby hopefully starts sleeping for longer stretches, so you get enough sleep to function at a baseline level.

Whoever said this:

“Do everything in your power to get your wife to breast feed. This will absolve you of at least a few weeks of waking up in the middle of the night”

Is wrong - if your wife wants to breast feed then support her, if not, then support that - some women simply cannot or prefer not to.

A breast-fed baby shits like a crazy person so you will need to change those diapers in the middle of the night

I have six children - I am not an expert but the relationship and the sex will be a lot better if you listen to her and try to help. Your life will change and it’ll be hard, but it’s worth it. I wouldn’t change a thing.

I got a book from the library that explained the development of the baby in her stomach and that was cool as shite. Your wife’s life will change immediately but yours really won’t. Being able to read how the baby was developing helped me stay engaged and excited.

That’s crazy that the stork brought you a baby like that!

Do you know who the father is?

Velcro swaddles. Only fricking magicians and pediatric nurses can swaddle a baby tight enough with a reg. blanket.

Also, throw out/return onesies with buttons. You do not want to deal with that ish at 2am. Zippers or bust.

The catch 22 is you also need the baby to learn how to take a bottle or the first time you're alone with the baby and they're hungry, but won't take a bottle, you are fricking SOL.

I would pump for the 6:30am feed while my husband would give our daughter a bottle of breastmilk. It was a good way to incorporate bottles and get the baby used to them.

I never changed a diaper before my oldest was born, you’ll be fine. Congrats! That little nugget is the best thing to ever happen to you
