Why to believe in God?

To live well. How would you arrange a hierarchy of value without a tangible concept of a supreme good for which to aim?

That's why.

The tangible concept is the person of Jesus Christ, God incarnate. Read the answers he gave to those who tried to accuse and corner him according to human tradition. Truly brilliant.

Be like Jesus = enjoying a good life. Experiencing heaven come down to earth.
Do it on your own = often very shitty. Creating for yourself a personal hell.
And not once did I even mention the after life. Amazing!

People hide from believing because once you realize it’s true, you have to make changes. If you seek, you will find.

Because God rules and to not believe in him is gay.

George: God would never let me be successful. He'd kill me first!

Therapist: But you don't believe in God.

George. I do for the bad things!

They are all man-made. You simply choose to have blind faith that yours is somehow the only real one, denying the fact that everyone else before you that believed in some diety had the same blind faith as you do now.

Better to believe & be wrong, then not believe & be wrong for eternity

If that's what makes you feel better about your life on earth, then so be it. You sound like a brainwashed 10 year old that still believes in Santa Claus when you say that though. No rational thinking adult should believe what you just said.

The judeo Christian God is the God of his people....most people aren't aware that this is what the text actually says because they've never studied it. For instance, he often refers to himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He doesn't say I'm the God of everyone...he chose a particular people, then opened it up for adoption to those who chose to obey his commands. This subject isn't easy to get across on a message board, but the tower of babel incident was a major watershed moment...most Christians have never looked at what's going on there, but basically the God of the bible divorced humanity and turned them over to lesser elohim (gods) to rule them. Each of the 70 nations (people groups) listed in genesis were assigned a chief diety almost like an NFL draft...the God of the bible chose last and picked a guy named abram from ur.

(To those of you that have never heard what I'm saying, i suggest you go read psalm 82 and it'll help bring you up to speed on this matter)

Is Tigerdroppings real? You know it is because you see your OP.

Is your air conditioner real? You know it is because your home is comfortable in July.

Is the rain real? You know it is because when you run through it in the parking lot, you get wet.

Is football real? You know it is because you get upset when LSU loses and thrilled when LSU wins a title.

So when you look around this world and you see the sun rise and the sun set, you see mountains, you see valleys, you see all the people, you see death, you see birth. What created all of that?

God is real because you see all that he created.

Go to church or say a prayer. You'll need it if today is your last day.

It takes just as much faith to not believe in God as it does to believe in God.

Atheism has become its own religion in a way.

The answer to the original question is (from St. Thomas Aquinas 5 proofs of God's existence):

1. Motion - all things have to be set in motion by something

2. Efficient cause - nothing can cause itself. It A doesn't exist, neither can B

3. Possibility and necessity - everything is contingent on something else

4. Gradiation - there must also be something which is to all beings the cause of their being, goodness, and every other perfection; and this we call God

5. Design - We observe that natural bodies act toward ends. God is evident in all of creation.

Any adult who actually believes in a god has some mental issues. Having faith in God is a different story. Believing is what the assholes who fly planes into buildings do. They believe it is what their god asks of them....in other words they are crazier than a shite house rat. A person of faith who started thinking god wanted them to fly a plane into a building would have a crisis of faith and not to do it OR they would go completely insane and do it. Faith is an admirable quality, it represents a sense of hope which is devoid in the true believer and the non-believer alike. I, like every human on earth who ever lived, am agnostic by definition. I lean toward atheism but I am not as arrogant as the devout atheist and true believer who both claims knowledge that neither them nor any human has ever possessed. That said I admire the hell out of a person who has faith in a god, who does not seek nor need proof of a god's existence but wants there to be something bigger than themselves and something beyond this life. That is an incredible leap and a BEAUTIFUL idea to possess and hold on to. Most people who claim to be belivers do not possess that level of faith....their actions towards others indicates they are actually atheists who know there is no god but pretend to believe. If they tell you they have proof of god they are even worse....that is and admission of a complete absence of faith. I was fortunate to have known both my paternal grandparents and great grandparents until I was a young adult myself. I learned almost everything I know about interacting with other people from them and they were people of faith....not believers, but WANTED there to be a God and that desire was so strong in them that they lead their lives in a manner which would ensure if there was the things they were taught in their church would be their reward. When you really think about that and watch their actions and see that they were sincere you can't help but admire that kind of commitment to faith in something larger than themselves in lives that were replete with misery and tragedy and pain that would lead anyone to question that faith. That kind of faith has no need for proof or knowledge...and, as far as I know, is all that is required of Christians.

This argument makes you seem stupid. Try having a conversation with religious folks instead of thinking you know their world view. The Christian faith is based on evidence and logic. The blind people are those who refuse to see the truth.

There is a whole load of responsibility that comes from believing in God that people do not want. It's much easier believing actions have no consequences, that there is nothing beyond the world, etc.

Simple...

If I am wrong, I just wasted my life.
If you are wrong, you wasted eternity.
