People who still do an oil change every 3,000 miles are suckers. Probably get their car serviced at the dealer all the time too.

Same people who only go to dealership body shops because they're "better".

3 month, 3000 miles harkens back to the days of carbureted engines and really doesn't apply anymore.
Yep, but places like Jiffy Lube probably still push it.

I use synthetic and change my oil between 8-10k miles. I set the car to warn me at 8k, and I get off my arse and do it sometime shortly (not immediately) thereafter.

Sadly this past year I think I went about a year and 15,000 miles between changes. That’s extreme for me but everything was fine.

Oil every 5 thousand miles, blinker fluid every 3 thousand.

If your truck is a GM or Ford, it monitors your driving habits to let you know when you need to change it.

Whoa now, only if you have ceramic muffler bearings, which you should change every 5k miles.

I understand the need depends on mileage, but why every year?

This is BS. I read on tiktok that it’s cause oil evaporates. It’s ok though you can just add water to it and be fine.

Yeah, I'm not surprised that it was fine at 15k.

I usually use Mobil 1 Extended which says it can go 20,000, but I figure it's better not to test it. It's something like $40 and 15 minutes of my time maybe twice a year.

My Tacoma manual says every 10,000 miles, so that's what I'm doing. I ignore the 3000-5000 mile these oil change places put on the sticker.

you're mistaken. you change your blinker fluid every year, you change your oil every 5000 miles.

When I was in the Army we were running a study of Chevy pickups and engine oil usage. One group never got their oil changed, just topped off if needed. The other group got an oil change every 4000 miles. Both sets showed a similar result in engine life. Do you know how much oil the US Army buys each year?

I do 10k oil changes. 20k filter changes.

You have a better chance of having an engine failure due to the oil change people screwing up than you do from the oil going bad. The more you screw with it, the more chances you have for someone to mess up.

Now that's the truth, but I either change my own oil or take the car into the stealership. Once it's out of warranty, I'll do it all myself. I use a torque wrench, the right crush washer, the correct oil, etc.

My vehicle has a turbo and mostly gets driven in Atlanta rush hour traffic, so I feel it's wise to be a little more diligent than I might be otherwise.

My wife, before we got married, drove around in an Accord where the oil was so low it didn't show up on the dip stick...

Kudos to Honda engines for surviving 98% of it's women drivers...

I change the oil every 5,000 miles or so. On one of my lower daily mileage cars, I change it every 6 months. There are a lot of moving parts including the timing chain which all depends on proper lubrication.

Is what I do overkill? More than likely, but I can say that with the 5 cars I have owned in my life, I have never had an engine issue and have owned all cars more than ten years. It is a small expense compared to the risk.

Many cars come with an oil life monitor, which is an algorithm and not just a time/mileage based meter. Refer to that if you are unsure and want to get as much bang for your buck.

That being said, the least life I had on my oil before a change was 30%.
