Isn’t it weird that
Just because something is weird doesn't mean it should be made illegal.
We'd have to lock Coyote in Leavenworth

Boomers are in the late 50-70s

yep, have to cover a lot of ground to make sure all opportunities are blocked for the current generation, can't let them have anything, even if it means going to Thaxtyn's high school graduation in your late 80s

Because it's not prohibited. Duh.
That's kind of the way we do things in a free society.

And it's not always people who are rich or people who just don't want to be pregnant. I've known multiple people to adopt who physically couldn't have children.
A couple of my friends have been through it and it was a rough, emotionally draining process for them.

There is nothing wrong with surrogacy on paper. If it's consenting adults, an agreement is reached, this is America. Laissez Faire.
What should be outlawed is factory surrogacy. It's repugnant.

do you have #s on "normal" surrogacy (married couples who can't physically carry a child) vs. other (gay men, surrogacy for convenience, etc.)?
I'm genuinely asking - I don't know that one or other other is rare vs. not, but I'm not convinced that the latter category is "rare"
Just from general knowledge of surrogacy laws (I've worked with clients who were surrogates or were married to surrogates) even from state to state. In some countries and states, only heterosexual couples can engage in surrogacy. Some countries have begun to limit "commercial surrogacy", so it's become even more cost prohibitive as well.
Gay couples utilizing surrogacy is a pretty new phenomenon which coincides with legalized marriage since a good chunk of states and countries require you to be legally married to even consider surrogacy.
PBS article on surrogacy data
ETA: I think surrogacy is actually a small percentage of productive assistance too, people tending to choose spending their money on IVF instead if possible. So surrogacy in itself is "rare" if that makes sense.

I got too much going on in my personal life to concern myself with the weirdness of others. Good luck to OP.

The PBS piece was pretty interesting, although it didn't really get at my question. My guess is that it's probably pretty difficult to tell.
For example, the consensus I've seen is that "altruistic surrogacy" in some cases can just be disguised commercial surrogacy. And personally, I know of some well to do surrogacy situations where health is the purported basis but people who'd know better than I have doubts as to whether that's true (ie, it may be impossible to discern what's for genuine health reasons vs. not wanting to go through pregnancy). I assume the latter is a fairly small number of surrogate situations, although we know it does happen.
What I found most interesting is seeing the other countries who have the type of limitations I'd like to see widespread here (for example, the detailed restrictions in India). Also, that the US is a destination for gay surrogacy, apparently.

A friend of mine's wife carried her sister-in-law's child for her. So, my friend's wife carried his sister's baby. His sister was unable to carry a child to term, so his wife offered to carry it. Very noble, IMO.

Because white women with degrees want to have their cake and eat it too.
