I’ll tell you the honest reason as someone that’s worked for both, government programs are someone else’s money. End of story, that’s the issue.

You see the same issues in Non-profits and organizations like that that use other people’s money, and have no incentive to build wealth or save money.

Private business there’s someone watching the bills and trying to get wealthier. Often times private business goes to shite when someone gets wealthy enough they don’t care anymore and don’t pay enough attention. There’s gotta be pressure to succeed, or mediocrity is accepted.

Because dumb people get those jobs.

The ones with smarts have the higher up jobs that the general public don't interact with.

But I guess that's no diff than most things we interact with. The CEO of like a Popeyes may be smart, but those people don't work in restaurants.

On some level it’s actually stunning that you can hand a guy an envelope and a dollar and you even get change back for that envelope to make it to a location across the country in a few days.

I frequently use USPS with my side hustle. I’ve never had an issue with a lost package or anything. I’ve also done lots of snail mail business with return envelopes. I also find it amazing that I can send something out for 55 cents and get it across the country, then get what I need back for 55 cents.

It’s like any business really. The qualifications to do the low level jobs are not high. You ultimately end up with people who suck at their job.

USPS employs thousands of people across major cities. Of course frick ups will happen.

I worked at UPS a couple of years ago and let me tell you, the usps is probably better especially for express packages.

The USPS is surprisingly efficient, given their fluctuating and heavy work load. Also Medicare works well from what I hear.

It took three weeks recently for 1st class mail to get from Lafayette to Thibodeaux, one week from Opelousas to another part of Opelousas.

The whole Civil Service thing does not make it any easier. Just makes it harder to fire someone if they are a special kind of stupid.

I would argue that there are many federal programs that are run well. NASA, NHC and NOAA, parks systems, people love their medicare/medicaid, our military, ICE, DHS, etc., for example. USPS was a net zero program before they were forced to fund their employee benefits up front despite not being able to charge extra for rural areas, then of course they started being upside down. USPS, flawed or not, has been a celebrated program until the last 20ish years.

Our state and local programs are mostly all horrific, and that's where people's opinions come from.

Not all.

But there's no mechanism for weeding out the ones that do.
