Because by volunteering to fight pointless wars for dipshit politicians they are ensuring your kids don't get drafted into fighting pointless wars for dipshit politicians.
That's my take anyway. And by the way, you're welcome.

Why are we supposed to tell service members, “thank you for your service”?
I never have and never will.
Do you do the same for firemen and EMS workers?
It’s a job.
My friends that were in the service say it makes them cringe when they hear it. Some literally respond- thanks, it was a job.

To be honest I never really liked it much when I was in the army and someone said that to me. I was polite about it, but I always thought it was kinda cheesy.

You thank them because if they hadn't all voluntarily enlisted during the past 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq, you might have been drafted to go there. They stepped up. They put their lives on the line. Many enlisted after 9/11 because they honestly believed in the mission..and like i said, if there hadn't been enough willing, you and the other unwilling might have made them reinstitute the draft. What we really need to do is get politicians who are committed to ending wars, not starting them.

I don’t know anyone that expects or seeks out praise for their service, but this is an idiotic take.

Yep, but that doesn't feed the war machine.

quote:I was drafted. My pay when I got out (E4)was 1/4 of what I was making a month later. Then I got raises. My place to live was in barracks with a bunch of other hard legs. When I got married I had to move out and pay. I make too much and own too much to get healthcare. USAA could not give me a better deal for my house and 2 car bundle than STATE FARM.
My dad served in the Air Force. He got paid a salary, a place to live, free healthcare for life, preference when applying for jobs, and they can buy USSAA insurance
I don't NEED anyone to thank me for what I did for them but it does the one thing that it DID NOT DO for me back then and for years afterward, make me proud of my duty.

I spent 30 years in the Air Force and don’t expect or seek it out. If someone thanks me, I smile, say thank you and move on. If you want to, fine if not, that’s okay too. It’s your choice. I say it to other Vets and those still serving as a sign of respect.

This isn’t a big deal. I’ll tell one thank you for your service if they thank me for paying taxes.
frick you. You can shove your taxes up your arse.
I've paid more taxes than you so you owe them.
BTW, did you know we paid taxes too while in the service. Does that mean I paid my own monthly pay???

Regarding the question of "do you thank police, firefighters, paramedics etc for their 'service?" I do highly regard people who go into careers that are dangerous but whose intent is to help people. (Most/many cops may fit that description but sadly too many are just on power trips)
However, it is not comparable to the enlisted military experience. Cops and firefighters have unions which largely dictate things such as how many hours they can work on a shift, paid holidays, guaranteed sick days. And when their workday ends they get to go home to their families and enjoy safety in their home to the degree that any of us are safe in our homes. Someone in a combat military job is NEVER safe. They don't get sick days and paid overtime. They don't get to go home to their families at the end of their shift (I'm talking about combat service) . They are away from their families for many months at a time. Even non-combat deployed military are at the mercy of their command and don't have a union rep to complain to. I am extremely grateful and appreciative of police, firefighters, paramedics and will express my admiration for the things they do. But it's still not the same in my mind as military service.

I am sure many of the Vietnam era guys still greatly appreciate it to this day, given how many of them were treated when they came back to the US. They also had to kill and watch watch their friends die in an era where the military tech was not even close to what it is today.

Whether they went into combat or not, I tell them because they signed up to defend our country and technically put their hyde on the line for our freedoms. Simple as that.

We do it to show respect and acknowledge the fact that they go above and beyond what most would not attempt. We thank them so that nimrods ,like you can live free and continue to ask stupid questions.

I used to get pretty bothered by this truly. I’d be traveling in uniform just trying to eat at an airport chili’s or something and people kept coming up to thank me. I get that it’s just a show of respect and they mean no wrong but I just wanted to eat.

If you have to ask, you have had a pretty sheltered life. I hope you never have events that answer the question for you son.
Next time you see your Dad, tell him we are grateful for his service.

You should know the Air Force isn’t true military. At least according to all the military people I know.

All I can tell you is having my husband shot at for a year in a 3rd world dumpster fire gave me a great respect for the men and women who voluntarily serve. It's hard to explain what it means to flinch when you hear an unexpected knock at your front door.
Most truly love the USA and do it so their fellow countrymen can spend the 4th of July drinking beer, river cruising, and jamming out to Toby Keith. They are happy to serve and protect, so really, no thanks is necessary.
