Hearing airlines are canceling flights but the update on the radio gave no explanation.

Weather is the main cause. Flights get delayed and eventually the airlines can’t fit them back into the schedule.

Not recently

Airlines are short on crew, particularly the regional subsidiaries (Mesa, Endeavor, SkyWest etc)

They are cancelling like 10% of flights it seems like

The demand for travel increased much faster than the airline restaffing did and they can’t keep up.

We are at record low unemployment. Unfortunately the way unemployment is calculated is terrible and doesn’t take into account a large portion of the populace living on welfare

Yep. The majors are hiring like crazy, reducing requirements and even hiring FO's from the regionals.

Not enough have jumped into the profession in recent years to feed the amount of seats that are being vacated.

By "jumped in" I mean got a degree, spend 2y and 100k+ in flight fees and applied to regionals.

The "shortage" we've been told is coming for the last 25y is finally here.
