If this is a political thread then admins please move it to the poli board but I always have people telling me how much better New Zealand and Canada and several European nations are doing with COVID compared to us.

Why is that or how are their stats being manipulated/misconstrued? I was reading a WAPO article about Canada’s performance but it didn’t actually list any of the things Canada was doing different. Just that their political leadership had handled it correctly. I’m trying to figure out actions and corresponding results.

They probably aren't aggressively testing on the scale we are. Not a fact, just an opinion.

They are not - they are perhaps reporting this accurately. We all know there is no longer unbiased media in the US.

The medical professionals have a good handle on treating the virus in this country.

To believe otherwise is asinine.

ETA--demographics, obesity and diabetes. We have a frick ton of fat slobs.

Once you account for population, the US is up there, but by no means does it account for the difference. The UK has tested more per capita but has 6 million fewer cases.

Updated Sweden Article

Well, one of those is an island and the other has 9x fewer people in the same space.

Italy, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, UK - All countries with more deaths per capita than the US.

One of those locked down for a month (Spain) another didn’t lock down at all (Sweden).

The truth to the best approach will play out. Did some level of herd immunity come into play? Who protected the most at risk?

It’s a completely manufactured media talking point.

It’s also completely disingenuous to compare the United States, as a whole, to other countries. State by State the US looks a lot different compared to countries (especially because you get to remove New York and other NE states botched response, for example)

It’s why the only thing you hear about now is “total cases”, because we are testing so much of our population and tracking it a lot more accurately.

It’s because we have more minorities than those countries and Covid is a racist disease made by straight white male capitalists.

There’s no good way to handle this crisis....no one is handling it “better” than anyone else. However, the political ramifications make the perception of our handling appear to be a total shitshow
