I don’t know what it is, but on long trips, I’d rather listen to over-the-air radio (if I can catch a good station) than satellite/pandora.
I find satellite and internet music a little monotone, dry, and boring.
I like the commercials, DJ’s, etc.

I listen to the radio and I still buy CDs, that is the only way I listen to music unless it’s at my home on my record player. I’m actually not joking

Anything over 4ish hours I listen to talk radio or comedy radio. Music on a long trip always makes me tired

I do, but I’m a radio nerd. I have tons of old transceivers you’d haggle with me over until I kicked you out.

Sound quality on many free radio stations is better than the pay stations

I still like flipping the dial to find new radio stations. I remember back in the day when I could drive East on I-10 and KLOL from Houston would turn into KBON from Eunice.

the best sounding records I have are probably a toss up between Gimme back my bullets by Skynard and The Captain and Me by the Doobie brothers. My favorites are 2112 by Rush and Searchin for a rainbow by The Marshall Tucker Band. All original pressings btw. HM goes to Flirting with disaster by Hatchet in both categories though

There's no local radio left. It's all syndicated programming.

I used to love trying to pull in the station furthest away. I've pulled in Miami while driving through the Louisville area, Quebec from the Midwest, and even pulled in the WMAQ broadcast of a SNF Bears game as I was on HWY 82 halfway between I-55 and Starkville (I have always been a Bears fan so that was a really sweet night.) The one that beats everything was pulling in a Cuban station. Everything except for Quebec was out of sheer boredom listening to CDs.

We have Sirius but I only really use it for McAfee and days like today where people all over SXM Sports block were going off on the Cleveland INDIANS bullshite virtue signaling. Local radio was declaring how great the name change was.

Has nothing to do with being boring. And believe me satellite radio has enough DJs who think you’re paying to hear them. Which is of the reasons its quality has gone down. If you listen to XM on a long road trip you’ll go through the set list a few times.

I used to drive a lot late at night and would find some pretty interesting stuff on AM radio. Doesn’t seem like that exist anymore.

Try driving from Santa Fe to Roswell and finding ANY radio station, or phone signal.

I left Madrid, NM one night about midnight, driving south to White Sands. There was about a 90 minute stretch where I had zero radio or phone signal. It would be 10-15 minutes between time seeing cars. Not a single light to be seen other than my headlights and the stars. Luckily GPS runs off satellite, even though the was no place to turn.

Between Vaughn and Carrizozo (where we stopped for the night), I felt like the only human on Earth.

No way. It’s too hard to find a good station when you don’t know the area. Most are shite
