Who here has an aquarium?

I’m thinking about jumping back into the hobby and setting up a Discus tank.
Anyone here kept discus?
Thinking about rolling with a 150 gallon.
What size tanks do you baws have?
What kind of filtration?

Been a long time since I was in the hobby. I actually worked at a local aquarium shop in college back in the 90's.
Back then the hot setup was undergravel filter beds with powerheads and mini reef systems were just getting started.
I have always heard Discus can be hard to keep and very sensitive to water chemistry.
Can't be any worse than saltwater in my opinion though.
My favorite tank was a 55 tall I had with lots of different Gourami varieties and silver dollars and Angelfish. Lots of variety and easy FW setup to keep up.
Wish I had more to offer on the current state of the hobby.

I would say avoid discus but you are coming back so you have experience. 150 is always a good choice. The bigger the better. Discus are one of the hardest freshwater fish to keep. Theyre a schooling fish so you cant just get one. They produce a lot of waste and they require a high temp aquarium. Planted also.
Just seems like a lot of hassle for a jump back in project.
Right now I am only running a 75. I wasnt home a lot for awhile and 3 tanks was getting to be a pain. For the past 2-3 years, Ive primarily used it as a grow out tank for my pond outside. Koi and goldfish and the occasional pleco. The pond is about 10 feet by 8 feet with maybe a 22 inch deep area. During covid, I added a water bog to the pond and I was completely able to ditch the 3 stage filter.

What kind of filter do you have in the 75?
Canister?

My aquaria have waxed and waned over the years with as many as 3 tanks at same time (shrimp/betta, trop community, and wild caught sunfish) but I’m down to just the community tank now. Might get some crawfish for the former sunfish tank. Ive always been intimidated by the requirements for discus.

I’d love a Koi pond but just don’t have the time right now, how much up keep is involved? TIA

I had a 40 gallon saltwater for a while but had to get rid of it when I moved to San Diego.
I wouldn't do another saltwater of that size unless I had a house. Maybe a smaller tank could work. Too much equipment and took up too much space.

i have 2 of the aquaclear hang on backs. They do about 600 gallons per hour. Theyre just easy to use and I had extras laying around so I use them now.
I used a canister on the pond and it just became a pain in the arse.
A sump wouldnt be a bad idea if you have the equipment

I had a five gallon saltwater tank for a long time. I had one clown fish and an anemone. I had a hang on the back protein skimmer.

I’m down to just a 55 with Geophagus, Bolivian Rams and a Zebra Pleco in it. I use the Fluval 407 as my filtration. Pool filter sand substrate, driftwood pieces I boiled the tannins out of myself, and fake plants
Super simple and easy to maintain. Which is what I like these days.

Like aquariums, the bigger the better. Besides the initial building and setting it up, its pretty easy.
I have a water bog that I use as filtration now and I pretty much have to do nothing besides maybe add water every now and then. With the heat here in LA, the water evaporates enough where I dont have to do actual water changes right now.
Whats the easiest way to post pics? Ill go snap some

Here some of the bog build and pond. I had a huge pic build of the pond on an aquatic site but it got taken down and I cant access it anymore.
I would suggest not getting a prefrabricated pond and just use pond liner on a self dig.
Here is the bog. I used a trough and basically pump the water into the pvc pipe to the back of the trough. I have a connector pvc pipe that goes vertical. Throughout the pipe I drilled holes to get water to the entire bog.
The bog has since grown out of control and it has the water crystal clear

It was a 55g. I’d catch juveniles in a minnow trap and cycle them out after they started getting bigger. I would have 4-5 sunfish and baby largemouths. I would feel bad keeping a fully grown bluegill in that. Maybe some adult Pygmy sunfish.

Used to have a 42 gal hex tank marine aquarium back in 1990-95 or so when I finished up college. It was a money pit, and I killed countless things.
Still loved it though...
I've found myself watching YouTube videos in the past few months about the hobby, which has come a LOOOOOONG way since I was in it. Thankfully, I don't have a great spot for a sizeable tank in my home, because the allure is still there.
