Which is more important, knowing something or being able to find the answer?

Does it matter as long as you get the answer?

Knowing something. Hands down. If I know the president of the company is screwing his secretary, I have leverage.

But what if you can search a database that shows all the dirt on all the employees at your company?

I think knowing something is mostly useful for showing off. Being able to find the answer takes up less of your memory and is just as effective

“I’d rather have a guy that works his arse off but gets Ds than some lazy, straight A student.”

A guy who makes D's obviously can't find the answer, either.

Being able to find the answer shows resourcefulness. Any good con artist can convincingly relay knowledge of something.

Knowing how to find it

Knowing how to change a tire in BFE with no cell service at 2AM is a hell of alot more useful than being able to Google.

Totally depends on the question at hand.
How to get laid? You damn well better know how to find pussy rather than know about it
How to get rich? You damn well better know how to find money rather than know about it.
How to get through an intersection Alive? You damn sure better know a Red light means wait your fricking turn.

Knowing because if you don't, then you won't know if the answer is correct.

as with most option A vs B scenarios, depends on the situation.
medically if someone is crashing in a hurry, you need to have some knowledge drilled in. you dont have time to run out of the room an pull up uptodate or consult a specialist to figure out how to stabilize.
if someone asks you what the treatment is for a non-imminently threatening symptom of some rare zebra cancer that is a 'be able to find the answer' situation.

You often need to know something in order to find the answer. Then you need to be able to understand and use the answer.

I don’t know but it’s what I choose to believe
Posted on 7/5/21 at 2:59 am to momentoftruth87
gotta know enough to frame the question
Posted on 7/5/21 at 3:14 am to momentoftruth87
Both.
Knowledge has a present value. The more you know, the more you connect things, see patterns, and learn to learn.
A lot of people who “find the answer” aren’t very critical of their sources. “I googled it.” Yeah? Well who wrote the post you rely on and why should you rely on that person?

Knowing, as the purpose of the search is to know, and yet the journey is often more enjoyable than the destination.

Wisdom vs. critical thinking.
It's situational.
