When are granite countertops going to go out of style?
Those things have to be going to way of formica countertops in the next few years, no?

Cambria counter tops will replace them sooner rather than later I would think, just as nice and you do not have to seal them every year.
Cambria

I didn't want them 5 years ago, so I made some concrete ones.

Concrete seems to be the newest thing, but I didn't care for it.

Have you looked into alternatives? The allure of granite faded about 5 years ago when every spec house in every shitty suburb had granite installed.

Prediction 2010: Granite Countertops Are So Last Decade

You know that feeling you get as you walk into a house with puke-yellow kitchen countertops, pale blue bathroom tile, and olive green shag carpet? How about that "what were we thinking?!" reaction when you look at pictures of your first house, complete with fake-wood paneling in the living room, stained glass light over the table, and linoleum flooring in the kitchen?

Mark my words: That is exactly the response that people will have 10 years from now when looking back at granite countertops.

No, I'm not some simpleton that can't appreciate the beauty of nature. In fact, I can see the appeal of having granite, if only for the unique charm of incorporating Mother Nature's 500 million-year-old child in your brand new kitchen. Unfortunately, my gut tells me that most people choose granite because their neighbors have granite, not because it's a great countertop material. In short, it's become nothing more than a "Keep up with the Jones'" thing.

I did. We checked out silestone (sp?) and corian countertops, but they were about $20/SF more than granite. I still like the look of granite and it's in our price range.

Quartz is super hot right now. Zodiaq is a good brand for that if you want to google it. I put that in my house. Also, marbles are super big although sort of high maintenance. I think marble is worth the maintenance though.

It's a PITmotherfrickingA to keep them sealed, and waxed. I have since given up and I think my wife has juiced lemons on every square inch of them. IDGAF though I like the thickness and the feel of them, they're 'softer' than most solid surfaces.

You are right about cambria. Love it! Zodiaq is its direct competitor and almost exactly the same. Cambria has more residential-looking options.
