What’s with the trend of people putting a lot of periods in the middle of their sentences?

This is going to sound super nitpicky, but one of my biggest pet peeves over the last couple years is people putting a bunch of unnecessary periods in between their sentences. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s an example

“Myles Brennan looked really good before the injury...... with that said Max Johnson showed a ton of leadership..... will be an interesting spring practice to say the least......”

Why go through the extra work of putting all of those periods? Why not just use a comma? This is something I see A LOT on the OT and the Tiger rant. But I see it on Facebook and Trumps Twitter a lot as well. It’s usually the uneducated crowd that does this, and it seems like more people are doing it every day.

I’ve asked a few people on this board why they do it, and I’ve received some vague answers like “I like to be understood” but it does literally nothing to make their posts more readable, and actually when read out loud makes it sound like the poster has asthma.

I know it’s a strange thing to get upset about. But the fact that SO many people do it is mind boggling.

It means, if I don’t skip through some of the useless info, you gonna tell me, “ain’t nobody gonna read all that”.

It’s to notate a new thought without being improper. Commas would be improper there

Easier to read by separating main ideas.

Back in the day that’s how we kept comm circuits open. It bought us time while you figure out a nicer way to say what you’re really feeling.

.....this is a forum for people to express their opinions. Granted we're not all well versed in Her Majesty's English, but it's called "expessing your opinion". A privilege made increasingly difficult by smart a***s who insist on shaming people.

Now go play and leave us alone.

it's called an ellipsis. It's probably over used and incorrectly used. But so are commas and so many other things.

It's making typed words translate more into if it was being said regarding the timing of delivery.

If I say

"You suck alot of dick, but do you take it in the arse?"

That is not the same as

"You SUCK ALOTTTttttt of dick.................. but do you take it in the arse?

It doesn’t make it easier to read. It just makes you look stupid.

Breaking up ideas into paragraphs and using commas are much more effective than..... typing...... like this.....

I guarantee that the people who type that way are not the type of people to read books for pleasure. It’s very easy to dictate the pace of a conversation without breaking your sentences up into little fragments.

I think the people who do it are people who were tired of being told that they need to stop posting run on sentences, so they are over compensating because they aren’t quiet sure what an actual sentence is supposed to look like.
