What's happening with Kenner Crowne Plaza hotel?

Since Covid they shut down & stripped the building of the Crowne Plaza logo. The parking lot was also blocked off.

Last Sunday I noticed a few cars and today the parking lot is packed. They have big signs by the front door stating they're not open to the public.

While there is a mix of cars and trucks in the parking lot there were a ton of pick up trucks. I even noticed an OT favorite "Oilfield Trash" license plate.

If only there was a big event that occurred nearby in the very recent past that would make an empty hotel useful to house people who are homeless or a large number of people coming in to help the newly homeless.

Oh well. I guess we'll never figure it out.

I thought that as well but why wouldn't they be housed closer to Lake Charles? It is a 3 hour drive.

I would tell you, but that would be a violation of the first rule.

Well, closer hotels are booked solid. Some people fleeing SWLA were going to Arkansas and Mississippi before they found hotel rooms to rent. Also, if you're bringing people in to help, you stage them close enough to where the storm is expected to hit so they can move in as soon as the storm passes, but not so close that you risk having to send rescuers to go get your rescuers. Finally, it's an empty hotel, so it's REALLY attractive for people trying to house several hundred people to lease the entire building for a few months to house everyone in one spot instead of having to put people in multiple locations.

For instance, it's an IDEAL place for someone like FEMA who is going to be here for a few months to set up shop. They have a place to sleep, probably have conference rooms they can set up in, they can turn hotel rooms into offices, if they need to the kitchen facilities can be put into service to feed their people. It's a pretty ideal type of location for something like that. As facilities become available closer to the affected area, they can start moving some of the "feet on the ground" type people in to make it easier and still maintain their headquarters in the leased hotel.

I am curious who's there, though.

Shell has the entire hotel rented out and uses it to quarantine people for 5 days before they travel offshore. Everyone must quarantine and be tested before traveling to a Shell drillship to combat Covid.

That answers that. I was wrong! Not storm related.

That makes sense. Explains the number of F250s in the parking lot. I also noticed 2 medical workers outside.

There are some post going around about evacuees being placed in several Nola hotels.

But logically the Shell answer makes sense. They and some of the other majors had to disrupt their normal quarintine and testing stuff away from Houma.

They were doing all the testing in Houma when it was a 1 day quarantine. Test one day and fly out the next. Now, you have to quarantine 5 days before flying out. Once they started with the 5 day, they needed a lot more rooms.

So what you’re saying is once they get to the Shell drillship then they’re going to combat COVID?

They are being housed in several places across LA. There’s 20 hotels in the Nola area contracted with the state to house evacuees.

I noticed the same thing at the Wyndham Garden Inn in BR at I-10 and Bluebonnet. Has been closed for a little while and was packed this weekend.
