Business attire, suit maybe if you are party of the wedding party

No one wears jeans to rehearsal dinners for people with money.
This is laughably false, but ok

Agreed. My advice would be sports coat, button down collar, no tie, but if you're going to wear a tie, wear a suit. If you're going to wear a suit, wear a tie.
Eh. Generally, I agree. But there are plenty of sport coats that can be worn well with a tie and slacks.
I'm not talking about a brass buttoned, blue blazer here.

I've been to one that was a crawfish boil so it was casual but outside of something like that it's a suit.

You guys are only saying this because of the type of event it is and because it's in the evening, yes?
I'm saying it because there is essentially no chance you'll be underdressed or overdressed with a sports coat, nice pants, and preferably a button down collar. Throw in a pocket square if you've got one that makes sense.

I totally agree with that, but I'm commenting on the suit vs sport coat with tie question.
I wouldn't wear a sport coat with a tie to an evening event where I thought I needed a tie. But in general, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a tie with a sport coat. That's what I was referencing.

No doubt, I'm just going off a generic sports coat someone may have.
Something like this is perfectly fine OP.

This is my go to if I'm not in the wedding. If I'm a groomsman, I'll wear a full suit.
Obviously I'll adjust my attire depending on the groom/bride's preferences, but those are my standard choices.

Oh shite, someone should have told 8th grade me that I shouldn't have worn a tie with that blazer and khakis to the homecoming dance
ETA: But I agree, I have no problem wearing a tie with most of the sport coats I own. Not sure where the notions that ties are only for suits comes from.

Casual suit with moccasins.
But you need some swag to pull that off.

Increasingly, rehearsal dinners I've gone to recently, in cities and for people with money, tend to be jeans with sport coat affairs.
New money.
The designer jeans, sport coat, shirt with pattern in the collar/under the cuffs is new money af.

Slacks and button up is fine. Maybe a sports coat. A suit is fine if you are feeling it, but generally is not necessary. Will also kind of depend on the type of event the people hosting make it.

Depends where the rehearsal is. I've been to two rehearsal dinners in the past month and a half. First one I wore a button down short sleeve shirt and the second I wore a sports coat.

If the OP wants to stand out a bit, go with a bow tie. Self tying of course. You can pull it off with the right sports coat and shirt.
Ditch the bow tie for a low key look though.

haha
you guys
wait until you go to an event only to see a family patriarch or some other old money person wearing jeans, a sport coat AND a tie, then your grip on reality will really get totally fricked

If you're the host or the family of the host, you can wear whatever you damn well please. If you're a guest, sticking to something more traditional won't steer you wrong.

I'm pretty traditional, I'm just pushing back on these staunch views that I don't think reflect east coast realities anymore. I'd play it safe too if in doubt.
