....and taxed it.

The house voted in favor of decriminalization. Senate is taking it up for debate now. Looks like it has a chance of passing.

Would being so close to Texas boost the tourism industry?

None. Decriminalized doesn’t mean it’s legal and recreational to use. It just means you can’t go to jail unless you have 14 grams of weed or more on you, “intent to distribute”. You’ll get a ticket if you’re caught with under 14 grams

This. Your politicians would just steal it and waste it anyway.

I hope it means more jail space and time for juvenile murder suspects.

Economic boost or fiscal boost? The boost to the state fiscal would be insignificant. I think the fiscal note projected $10 million. For perspective Colorado took in $30 million in 2020, which was the biggest year so far. Nothing to sneeze at, but on a $37 Billion budget it is a rounding error.

The economic impact would be larger, but again in a state where agriculture is already a big industry it probably would not be all that significant.

People act like taxing weed is the cure all to budgetary problems and jobs. It won’t make a dent.

People will continue to buy from dealers as it will be way cheaper than buying it legally in a store.

Either tax it similar to alcohol or just simply tax it similar to retail items. The people should be free to smoke weed, not free to smoke week once we’ve decided on an appropriate tax rate.

Sad but true. I do think it would still be a big benefit the economy if it was legalized for recreational use. Especially in NOLA. Politicians would no doubt steal tax dollars, but aside from that Tourism would go way up. Lots of local businesses would get a big boost.

If it’s Legalized: Colorado made 260 M of cannabis in fy 18-19. That would represent %0.72 Of Louisiana’s budget

People think we have a problem with drunk drivers.

This will make DUI far worse.

You would need it to be legalized to spur an economic benefit

Not nearly the kind of boost we'd see if we'd just criminalize our politicians.

Now add in all the extra revenue from tourists who want to come to the only southeastern state with legal weed.

Immediately, it would have very little impact. Only the state grows the product for sale. Imagine if only state manufactured liquor and beer was sold in LA?
