What is the technique being used to steal all of these Kia's?

Are they replicating/stealing the wireless codes? Or is it a physical weakness?

Physical weakness from what I’ve read

I’ll answer since it’s really nothing you can’t find easily (I also own one of the susceptible models). It’s just a normal Hotwire situation but a standard USB 2.0 cable works perfectly as a dummy key. What makes it a problem is they were manufactured without an immobilizer standard to modern cars, and it’s essentially become a trend/challenge on social media. It’s to the level currently that if you own one of these cars in certain cities, your car IS getting stolen, there’s hardly any “maybe” involved.

Watched a news video about 6 months ago, they did not show the details, but the kid thief said the only thing he used to start it was an iphone charger cable and he was happy that the owner left him one so he did not have to use his

Theres videos online.
Remove plastic bit beneath the steering wheel, remove key ignition, use square usb end to fit over the ignition and turn it.

The keys don't have electronic immobilizers so if you can get past the ignition you can start the car without a key.
Donut Media had a Youtube video a while back, it's frighteningly easy and can be done in about 30 seconds.
Pry the plastic off the underside of the steering column, pry out the tumbler for the key, behind that is a rectangle shaped piece that sticks out that fits a USB cord perfectly, that serves as the key, they'll fire right up.
These dudes really are stealing these with a screwdriver and a phone charger.

Hood teens ain’t that smart
Issue with lack of security in the physical ignition. Flaw doesn’t apply to push button start
YouTube video on the subject

Has it been officially stated why there are so many car thefts to begin with? I understand Kias and Hyundais are easier, but why have thefts, in general, increased? These aren't going to chop shops and being sold it seems. Are they doing it for thrill of being a thug? Are they doing it because they don't have a vehicle and it's easy enough to steal one for a ride somewhere/temporary vehicle? Then again, that doesn't explain the carjackings. Then again if they're not being caught/charged, shear laziness of looking for an unoccupied kia might outweigh the risk of jacking another brand of vehicle.
Anyone have any insight on the above?

Not even that. Doing it for online clout on tiktok and youtube. It's a tide pod challenge to them.

In NOLA, I don’t think going to chop shops. More of joyriding teens or using a stolen car to commit other crimes.
Often they will be found abandoned after they run out of gas or crashed
Also, if caught in NOLA likely won’t be prosecuted so why not? It’s fun to do hoodrat stuff with your friends!

Yes. These youths aren’t allowed to purchase a car because of the racist credit score system so they have to borrow cars to get to work

Basically. Steal a car to ride around and commit further crimes. Instead of trying to escape on foot if found they now are able to escape in a vehicle. In N.O. the police dept. isn't allowed to engage in vehicle chases. It's a crime multiplier to a pretty decent factor. They also get the thrills of joy riding, smoking weed in car, mobile shooting platform, and a spot to fk da hoes in.
Serves multiple purposes and all for free!!!!!!!!

I don't know how much Kia saved by not putting an immobilizer chip in, but it has to be pennies compared to the bad press they are now getting.
