It's a multi-person team that is tasked with reducing the amount of white-owned suppliers that our university purchases from.

They don't actually do the procurement. That's another department. Are they doing spot-checks on vendors to make sure they aren't white? Just trying to figure out how they fill a 40 hour work week..

eta: they have a job opening, if anyone is interested: LINK

I don't understand how half the jobs in this country fill a 40-hour work week.

Is the job for kickbacks and sweetheart deals or do I need to apply elsewhere?

A diversity of suppliers reduces risk in the supply chain. Like for example I went to a Bama game one year and they didn't have coffee. That's because they had one supplier and that supplier failed them and they didn't have a backup. If you are a small business owner this is the person you want to be speaking with to get your product onto campus. They work with small business owners to provide equal opportunity and not rely on one bug supplier like say Amazon for everything.

Procurement org

Good place to start if you are involved in procurement with public universities and states.

Yeah it’s more of a supply chain management thing here. Don’t think they are checking in to make sure the Buyers are not using white owned companies as often.

Many large corporations have a litany of these useless fricks. At my company, all they do is send out reports telling us to spend more money with a diverse company (solely because they aren’t owned by a straight white man). I immediately delete their emails.

90% of university administrative jobs are vague and probably have so many layers of signoffs and checks by all other layers, these employees probably seem busy, but actually get little to nothing accomplished.

Compare:

Need: New computer for a department head
University setting:
1. Department head files request for new computer.
2. Sent to department finance officer for analysis.
3. Sent to college finance director for review
4. Sent to Administration employee accounting office for review and check
5. Material officer verifies where new computer is to be purchased and sends to University IT department
6. University IT department sends to department IT department to confirm with the original requestor in actual need for computer.
7. Coordinates with "Green" initiative Coordinator for approval to add electrical device in office.
8. Diversity officer confirms black iwned computer companies have opportunity to bid for computer addition
9. Quotes sent to various computer contractors by University external corporation purchase department.
10. Computer selected through open bid policy
11. Order placed by University purchase department

Private company setting:

1. Boss: "hey, order a computer from Best Buy for me". Order immediately placed.

Yeah.. y’all are wrong. It’s pretty much what OP described.

LSU Supplier Diversity

quote:

Louisiana State University is committed to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through the use of diverse suppliers. The goal of the diversity initiative is to identify, align, strengthen and connect with Louisiana’s historically underutilized business enterprises. Creating opportunities for HUB business enterprises that result in a meaningful economic impact for Louisiana State University and the community.

LSU Supplier Diversity Policy

quote:

Diverse Supplier: A for profit, U.S. privately held corporation, sole proprietorship, partnership or joint venture in which 51% of the stock, shares and/or equity are owned and operated by one or more persons who are members of the following groups: Woman, Minority (Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Asian Indian, Hispanic and Native American), service disabled veteran, veteran, historically underutilized business (HUB), LBGT, or person with a disability who are also U.S. citizens

ETA: To the OP, it sounds like they primarily work on outreach and reporting. So they monitor utilization of “historically under-utilized businesses” while also helping those businesses become qualified suppliers for the university. FWIW, this is not something specific to LSU. It’s more of a government contracting thing, both at the state and federal levels.

As a Hispanic woman it is extremely difficult to secure contracts on anything not related to maid services. Positions like this really help me get my foot in the door in places I wouldn't that are otherwise run by the good ole CC grey hairs types. I don't have the free cashflow money to bribe politicians nor do I have a skybox to wine and dine the President of the LSU foundations.

How do they verify this information?
