Tall TV towers need to be located away from airports but yet still as close to population centers as possible.

They’re to lift radio and tv signals over the mountains of southwest Arkansas

FM radio and TV broadcasts are “line of sight”, the higher the antenna the larger the area your station will cover. Placing the towers in a area of higher elevation puts the antenna. AM broadcast are “groundwave”, but the antenna needs to be placed either in the middle, or the outside of the city where coverage is desired. Since stations often operate both a AM and FM station the AM transmitter and antenna is often located at the same location as the FM transmitter allowing the stations to share towers and transmitter buildings.

One of the tallest structures in the US is in Vacharie, LA. Communication tower for WCKW standing almost 2000' tall.
The call letters WCKW were used to denote it was a Hundred Thousand Watts of power transmitting.
It is also uses a W instead of K despite the tower being on the west side of the Mississippi river. Licensed in Laplace, studios in New Orleans, transmitter in Vacharie.
