We’re no smarter than people centuries ago. Watch a castle built using 13th century tech

Guedelon Castle Overview
Guedelon Castle Wiki
Secrets of the Castle Episode-1hr 1 of 4 but worth the watch.
So I came across this a year or so ago and have gone back again and again to watch and learn.
It’s an archeological project started in 1997 and still going on where they are building a castle using only materials and techniques available in the 13th century. And they make damn near EVERYTHING from scratch using local materials.
If you like construction, history, or just cool stuff, give this a watch. They make rope starting from fibers, smelt ore, make mortar from slaked lime and sand.
The theories and machines are basically the same, just powered by man, horse, water…instead of electricity and combustion.
There’s a giant man powered hamster-wheel crane that is fascinating to watch in action.
I fully believe that man had the same (or greater) intelligence as modern man possesses. We’ve just been standing on so many shoulders and using the same basic techniques for millennia. I’m convinced if you brought combustion and electricity back to Medieval craftsmen they’d either improve it or be able to utilize it in short order.
What do you think?

In terms of real world applications, greater. Humans are very intuitive and clever animals.

Maybe so. Or maybe the law of diminishing returns allowed us to focus on other things.
Cranes, for example, went from animal/human power to steam to combustion to electricity. Is there a next feasible more efficient step past electricity?

They don't have their own Youtube channel for the whole build?

That's really cool. Will watch tonight insha allah

Cold fusion, if it can be fleshed out. Still some people theorizing and working on it somewhere I'm sure.

I’ve been watching it on the Timeline channel. Absolutely fascinating stuff. Has 4 parts, about an hour each

They're only using video-hosting web services that were available in the 13th century
Netscape

It might load in the time it takes them to build the whole damn thing

We have better tech, but lazier people

I kinda agree but it's hard to go too much when, for example, I can spend an hour watching YT or reading forums and learn how to rebuild a pump motor, or do a million things. Hard comparison to make.

I've gone down a massive rabbit hole watching this crew do everything from build castles to living like people in Tudor England to living in the UK during the Blitz. Very interesting show all around.

Sure, because we are used to the tech.
You take a craftsman from hundreds of years ago and plop him down here, and once he gets over the shock I bet he can grasp it fairly quickly, (as long as he can understand the language).
Just tell him it’s a magic wizard box with gnomes trapped inside. Might be easier than explaining a computer.

Masons were revered for a reason

Seems like a pretty safe assumption

Just a dreadfully constructed... Sentence.

Anyone been to Bishop's Castle in Colorado? Pretty neat place build by one man. Met the old guy while he was working on it in June.

Watching them work is mesmerizing. I’ve got a buddy who does woodworking and does a lot by hand and I could watch him use the hand planer or the draw knife for hours.
And those are the same basic tools used for millennia
