Webb telescope, still scheduled for November launch?
Posted by CovingtonTigre on 8/4/21 at 7:40 pm40
I was excited by this but lost track of it. It’s supposed to replace the Hubble and to my last knowledge was scheduled to launch this November.
First space mission that has excited me in my lifetime (yes I wasn’t alive for the moon landing).

They have to figure out what to call it now because Webb is a racist, sexist, homophobe.

If it's not too racist. I heard it was ready but people were trying to cancel the name.

Y’all are making it hard to be a participant on this board. Jesus Christ I can’t even talk about space anymore.

And that's OUR fricking fault? I didn't try to get Webb cancelled 30 fricking years in the grave.
To your original question the Unicorn-Rainbow telescope is still on pace to launch on the frog rocket in November.

I mean that is the topic right now. People are actively trying to get the name changed because Webb might have not hired enough women 40 years ago.

Ace,
Yes. I didn’t ask about the name. That’s your own little op-Ed. Own your stances.

You asked using the name. You don't think the very recent naming controversy is relevant?

I'm using embellished language, but this is literally happening. It is literally a thing. They are trying to change the name because of things Webb did 70 years ago that literally everyone in government did.

frick you, aight?

Have they announced they are definitely changing it? Or is this just some SJW Twitter stuff?

Ace,
In respect to my question? Not at all.

No, O'Keefe is standing by it for now.

It's more than that - a letter by some astronomers. There was a Scientific American article on it a couple of weeks back.

Is it relevant to this discussion? Or were you focused on your basic question that could have been answered by Google?
It's your thread and I fear we have gotten off on the wrong foot. I'm a space junkie but I'm also old and very, very, very, very, very tired of the SJW wars.

Ace,
I wanted a discussion on the launch date & possible new breakthroughs this could entail for us.
So far my only experience of you is that you want to argue about “SJW wars”. I apologize if I offended you.

When Hubbell was launched, it was like the blind being able to see. Particularly the visual wonders it brought compared to the relatively clumsy, old school atmospheric observatory (or even more crude, the early imagery taken from LEO with less than specialized equipment).
With all the advances in cameras since Hubbell and what we learned about space "mega" telescopes from operating Hubbell itself, I have cautious optimism about what *Webb* will be able to do.
On the other hand, it almost can't be but an incremental change, because we were going from almost nothing to Hubbell before. I feel Webb will be Hubbell 2.0 and that may not be the excitement we were all looking for.
There is a lot of potential in the non-visible spectrum, but that isn't as sexy and flashy as some of the eye-popping visual images of things we got from Hubbell, including a lot of things we thought we know how they looked.

I don’t care if they call it the Freddie Mercury at this point just get that thing in orbit. I have been looking forward to this for years. I’m sick of all the delays.

So, I guess the OP didn't want a discussion? Just wanted someone to google his answer for him?
Well, nicely played, then.

Me either. I don't care if they call it BLM. I wasnt making a joke earlier about the guy being called racist and not trying to derail the thread with jokes. Alot of people calling for name change.

I dunno. I kind of feel like that sometimes, but then again, this board has always been a little off kilter. (I think the slogan back in the day was 'Abandon all hope, ye who enter here"
Besides, there is some level of entertainment value in watching the extent to which people will go to insert politics into all different types of threads.

If you don't get how the naming controversy - WHICH I DID NOT CREATE - which hit a couple of weeks ago would be relevant in a Webb telescope thread, then I just don't know what to tell you.
