In essence, Walmart can pay so little to workers Bc the taxpayer picks up the slack. Thus, the taxpayers subsidize employers like Walmart.
That's the argument. Gov subsidies shouldn't be necessary for anyone who actually works full time.
Walmart actually pays pretty decent if you move up to a supervisor position beyond the entry level cashier/shelf stocking jobs. But if you're just stocking shelves or a cashier, its not like Winn Dixie, Kroger, or Rouse's is going to pay much differently. Its a job that requires no skill or experience, so the pay won't be great anywhere.
Problem is that back in the day, those were jobs being filled by high school and college students trying to get some work experience and make some spending money for the weekend.....not meant to be long term careers for people in their 30's and 40's with kids at home to support. And many of them don't get promoted or can't find a better paying job because they lack education, skills, and/or work ethic. But its everyone elses fault they only make $8/hour

I know you must be trolling, cuz you can't be this stupid.
People don't go into business to create jobs for people... at a living wage or not.
People go into business because they see a profit opportunity. You see, people want to make money, provide for their family's security, get rich, or whatever. Nobody goes into business to make sure they are providing living wage jobs to society. Who the hell decides what a living wage is anyway??

I have so much to say about that that I am speechless.
What grade are you in?
what in the world
why should i subsidize your business because you cant afford to pay your employees a living wage?

Minimum wage jobs do not equal careers.
we need trash men
we need gas clerks
we need fireman
we need baristas
etc
society can not function (currently) without people doing this type of pleb labor, so i agree its not a "career" but the job is functional and needed.
btw, 80% of ppl who earn minimum wage are over the age of 25, so the HS argument doesnt hold too much weight

Minimum wage isn't meant to be a living wage. It's entry level pay for high school kids and people with no skills. If an adult is still making minimum wage than there are other issues going on. I made minimum wage for 4 or 5 months at my first job when I was 16.

according to your logic, every special snowflake who opens a business deserves to succeed.
i dont think so jeff
i never understood why small business owners think they have a right to own a small business. what in the world

If you're making min. wage at age 25, you are unemployable for all practical purposes.

did i stutter?
hes literally saying that if a small business owner sees an "opportunity" that he can operate by paying his employees crap wages so taxpayers have to subsidize the operation
its insane

So paying people 45k/year for putting product on a shelf is vital to society?

im not arguing the value of that labor, all im saying, is that that type of work is needed
someone has to do it - so they should be able to live off of their wages - without you and i paying for their food stamps

Landrieu will take it down. It helps to destract from his criminal negligence in allowing the water pumps in New Orleans to fall into a state of disrepair.

These jobs are starting points, not careers. Like Roger said, if you're doing this at 25, you're essentially unemployable

If all jobs guaranteed a living wage, say 35k, inflation would make 35k the new poor people. You can't artificially set floors without consequences due to scarcity of resources.
I'm in favor of abolishing the minimum wage. I think most people would be making more now if it were never implemented.

"Economics in one lesson" by Henry Hazlitt should be required reading in all high schools

Said by people who just posted something that relies on gross oversimplification of economics.
