Took the wife to happy hour at a local pub near the house the other day. We had a couple beers and some bar bites; nice little outing. On their liquor wall, I noticed a bottle of bourbon whose name I didn’t recognize. Then I noticed a second bottle of the same name, different age. I never said the name aloud, I never Google-searched it, nothing. The moment passed quickly and I haven’t thought of the name again.

Just now, I was perusing social media and see an advertisement for that very same bourbon. If it were Jack Daniels or Crown, that would be one thing. But it wasn’t. Slightly more obscure brand called George Dickel.

We are living in a simulation.

We're living in a simulation because you've never heard of George Dickel?

Had you ever stopped to consider that you just don't know Bourbon all that well?

George Dickel is one of the most recognizable brands out there.

It’s common knowledge that apple, Amazon and others sell personal data to google and social media companies. Yes, audio data too.

I’m not denying that and don’t claim to be some sort of bourbon guy. I just find it odd I’d never recognized the name and then get an unsolicited advertisement.

Right, but I didn’t search or say the name aloud.

What advertisements are ever solicited?

This would be creepier if it gave you an ad for some sort of close to you micro distilled bourbon.

My great uncle drank George Dickel every night. To your point, I’ve had almost the same thing happen to me with some other product that I can’t remember now. I really tried to figure it out, but I never could come up with an explanation.

Your phone pinged you at a bar and you got ads for liquor.

Shocker.

Shot of Dickle followed by a shot of pickle juice. You’re very welcome.

I know what you mean, man.
I’ll think of something off the wall and then I’ll drive by a billboard advertising that exact thing

You were possibly targeted based on your location.

Dickel may work some marketing magic. Therefore, you:

A) Were in a location that sold their product.
B) You might meet their criteria for HHI
C) Meet other attributions that meet their target audience
D) From a recency standpoint - you were just in the location
E) I could go on...

All of that said, that little device you carry around with you can tell companies A LOT about you, and how to market to you.

I would buy your "simulation" theory more if you saw 2 bottles of Deorge Gickel. What you saw was Google spies listening into your conversation in a bar.

Unless Google has already placed an AI ocular implant in your skull.. Those are still beta so congrats on the early adoption I guess.

When I think common, I think Jack, Jim, Crown.
