there is no historical Santa
yes, there is - that’s St. Nicholas the bishop from Myra - he is from history

As for Santa Claus - it’s a legendary European figure that started in Germany/The Netherlands / that was based off of St Nicholas in name only but made to look like the people who made him up - they brought those traditions here to the USA bc at one time there were a hell of a lot of krauts

And that’s what the ‘traditional’ Santa comes from

So you are saying the same thing as me but trying to make room for the black Santa - which I really don’t care about - but you also have to see how it’s cultural appropriation

to clarify, i wouldn't either. Kind of like wearing a mask in 2022, I’m just secretly judging them.

b/c there is ABSOLUTELY room for a black Santa... he's a fricking made up character, not a physical, biographical representation!! what is hard to understand about that??

ALL versions of Santa, from here in America to other countries, are cultural appropriations! How do you NOT know this? different cultures have their versions of Santa, and I can promise you, not all countries have a fat arse white dude in a red suit as Santa... so, yes, ALL versions of Santa are derived from the cultures they exist in... we just happen to have various cultures here in the great melting pot of America, and no one culture should have exclusive claim to what skin color a fictional character is, realistically...

and it's kind of funny how we've had all sorts of fictional characters dressed up as Santa, like Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, etc), no one says shite... we've had Santa portrayed as drunk in Bad Santa and even this year as a killer, no one says shite... but let Santa be black, and people start losing their shite...

That's kind of what Santa is all about, but I don't see any here. Did I miss some black cultural cues in this commercial?

so, this isn’t cultural appropriation. but if you and I opened a Taco stand or a Soul food joint. How do you think the purple haired suburban white women would feel about that?

I don't much care how a purple haired white woman would feel about me serving mexican or "black" food (I also don't care what she thinks about Taco Bell), and I think mexicans and blacks would be honored/flattered that I like "their" food so much. Or maybe they would laugh at my attempt at copying their food.

There's nothing insulting about any of that, nor does it take away from the culture from which it was derived. Same goes for black Santa.

exactly, but you know the 2 scenarios are treated completely different if you are not being disingenuous.

Based on this thread, you are correct. I know plenty black people and I can't think of a single one who would get mad if I opened a soul food restaurant. I think most of them would even come try this white boy's take on it. But make Santa black and some white folks don't like it at all. I can think of a few in my extended family who get their panties in a bunch over it.

But I guess you feel it goes the other way more often?

Yes and according to 90 percent of commercials there are no same race couples anymore.

At Disney World last year they had a black Santa in the parade. Black dude with his family next to me said (unprovoked and loudly) “My kids know Santa ain’t black!” He was legit pissed.

Your perception and lived experience is correct and valid while mine is not. Also this 9 page thread full of white folks complaining about black santa is an illusion, while the purple haired white woman complaining about a white dude with a taco truck is most definitely real.

And there is no way that you've been led to believe that "the others" behave a certain way in order to justify your own behavior and feelings.

I've got it all straight now thanks

The left will slowly and methodically dismantle every beloved tradition we have in the United States.
