Last Friday, the Fagradalsfjall volcano near Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik began erupting for the first time in 800 years after the island nation was hit by thousands of small earthquakes. Thankfully, the eruption was small and has not put anyone in danger. Instead, it’s gifted the world with some awe-inspiring views of lava flowing from the ground.

The sight has been best captured by Icelandic drone pilot Bjorn Steinbekk, who took the straightforward approach of flying right through the eruption. We spotted the footage from Steinbekk (above) via Twitter, and it seems he flew several sorties through the airborne lava — a daring feat that makes us wonder how his drone survived the high temperatures.

I watched this footage today and wondered the same thing? Was this a special drone or was it just moving too fast to get too hot?

What's with the Europeans standing on the side of roads watching rally cars fly by inches from their faces and now standing on top of a volcano as it is erupting. WTF are those people doing there?

Yep. 15 seconds and it's over. Drone burned up on reentry.

A bit OT but what is the range of a remote to control the drone?

Great video btw

Some drones can have a predetermined flight path and don’t need to communicate with the remote during this time. They also use gps to return to the remote either according to the flight path or when batteries get low. Of course that’s the more sophisticated/expensive drones. My buddy is a filmmaker and he will send his off like a mile or so away on a flight path to capture footage. Downside is he won’t be able to control the gimbal once it’s out of range.

ETA: just looked up his drone and it actually has a range of 4.3 miles so he must send it off further than a mile as previously stated

Hey guys, let's take the kids to stand 500 feet from an erupting volcano. These things are totally predictable.

Does the tech exist for the high def video to be transferred instantly so he doesn’t have to recover the drone and its SD card after the flight?

It’s a DJI drone I bet. I have a few of them. The range is nowhere near 4.3 miles 99% of the time.

The women in Reykjavík are amazing.
