re: Was Freshman High School hazing a real thing at your High School like they show in movies?

I was bigger than most seniors and had a family that most people knew not to mess with, so I'm not sure what others experienced.

Was in high school in the early 90's. It didn't really happen much, but there were a few "ceremonial" things on the sports teams and clubs.
On the football team each year the upperclassmen would shave the freshman's heads during the summer practices as an initiation. They gave me some sort of strange reverse mohawk thing. Everyone got something strange shaved on their heads. Basically we all went home that night and completely buzzed our hair, pretty harmless. Actually pretty useful and low maintenance during summer practices. Other teams had similar stuff, when I started baseball and track they wanted to do something similar, but the guys I played football with that were on those teams just told them that I already did my initiation. Have to admit, it was fun doing the same to underclassmen when I was a senior.

Yep, it was pretty rough.
High-school guys roamed around, and jumped 8th-graders, held them down, and shaved their heads bald. A lot of guys I knew tried fighting back, and got pretty roughed up. Some parents just took their kids to the barber, and have him do it, so their kid wouldn't be prey as they walked around town or the neighborhood. I kept a low profile, and didn't get out much that summer. And I think I might have been just about the only 8th-grade boy that did 'not' get shaved bald.

Nah. When I was in school no one gave a shite about the freshmen. People really didn't associate with people outside of their own class very much, especially seniors and freshmen.
My school was 7-12, so they had the junior high there with us. They kept them sorta in their own building, but it was all connected. So the 7th graders were on the low end of the totem pole which gave freshmen some relief I guess.
Looking back on it, I think it's kinda crazy having 7th graders walking the halls with 17-18 year olds. But it was sorta a small town and the classes weren't big enough to warrant a separate junior high.

High school? No but middle school/Jr high at the large public school I went to essentially had the culture of a medium security prison.

Hazing was a real thing in my freshman year, 1972.

I went to Rummel and no hazing occurred.

Yea, small town Ohio was rough. They all beat the shite out of us. Nonstop seniors depantsing freshmen when girls were around .
If a freshman was pissing at urinal, seniors would post up at urinal on each side and drop their pants entirely and stare. Weird stuff. If you were taking a dump, they’d drop the steel trash can on top of your head over stall door. Several of those dudes were like 6’4 up to 6’6 just massive and mean.

Dazed and Confused is overrated. It sucked. Pointless movie.

Yeah, we got hazed. My freshman class was cocky and obnoxious and the juniors that year were mean as rattlesnakes and grown arse men to boot. They made a special project out of putting us in our place.
The seniors were chill and ignored us with one exception I remember. A kid in my class got one of those hardship licenses where you can drive to school when you're 14. He made the mistake of parking in the Senior parking lot one day. Some of the mechanically inclined seniors ditched part of the day and completely disassembled his car in the parking lot.
There was another kid they would mess with by stealing his backpack every day and hiding it somewhere at the school and then giving him hints on where to find it. One day a kid who was a legit rockclimbing stud scampered 100 feet up and old oak tree and hung it on a branch. They told him it was "near" the old oak tree and when he got there a note was pinned to the tree that said "look up"

seniors vs freshmen students? no
seniors vs freshmen band kids? a little but it was tame
whites vs blacks on the basketball team? everyday but it wasnt hazing, more like messing with us or straight up intimidation. there were three whites guys in a program of about 30. we held our own

People did pranks I guess. Maybe if you knew some older dudes because of a sibling they might eff with you.
Not beat you with a paddle and chase you down after baseball practice.

I was in school in the 90's. I got to thinking that everyone now carries backpacks, but at my school no one did. It was a small town in a very low crime area, so I doubt it was a "rule" or anything. Everyone carried their books in their hands by their side. Looking back, it makes no sense as backpacks are much more convenient.
Anyone else have the same experience?

Maybe it was a 90’s thing, because we did the same thing at the time in suburban Pittsburgh. I had a backpack, I think, but we all just carried our books around like idiots. My locker was pretty central so I usually passed it from class to class and swap out books. But at the end of the day, on the way home, I’d be toting around 3 or 4 books.

Better to be pissed off than pissed on. Bully’s will always exists.
