Wikipedia says this is not included in the definition of recession.

Give wikipedia a break. They are currently working on the definition of definition.

I do my own scanning now at the self checkout and love it. No more rude unhappy cashiers to deal with

Do they have to hire Bill Clinton to parse that for them?

it won't. it never does. neither party has done anything to shrink government in any kind of meaningful way. they'll just raise taxes or rob social security

Main reason to use a cashier these days, IMHO, is if you have a ton of items, you have clearance stuff that won’t necessarily ring up right, or you need the security thing removed from it (plastic case or spider web).

They can be replaced by self checkout machines.

I do if I don't have produce. Well, I end up using more often than not now, whether I have produce or not, because there is rarely more than one or two registers open.

I still maintain that if you use self checkout you should automatically get a 10% discount on your entire purchase.

How long does it take those cashiers to get this corrected when this happens?

Why is everybody so against self-checkout? I personally like it, I can bag my groceries the way I want to

Depends on what it is. But having one there beats having to flag one down at self checkout.

Also for the sick/weak. I recently had pneumonia and my first trip back to the grocery during my recovery was harrowing trying to unload, scan, bag, load all by myself. I felt bad for people with actual disabilities trying to do all that on their own.

Some of this is undoubtedly due to Amazon's insane growth and reach, but I wouldn't doubt for a minute that the brunt of it is the impact from year-long high inflation rates, fuel prices and increasing energy prices.

This is just the beginning; we're going to see more and more stories like this over the next few months.
