Pilot program to let 18 yo's drive rigs to ease supply chain issues...

I'm torn on this TBH. One part of me says that 18 y.o. kids can barely drive street cars, let alone rigs and that there will be wrecks and clogged up interstates everywhere.

But the other part of me thinks that this could be a good thing. We could think of this in the same vein as learning a trade. And rig driving is a skill that is learned, much like being an electrician, plumber, pipe-fitter, etc. And if it helps ease the ridiculous supply chain issues then I'm all for it.

Thoughts?

Probably better than the old grumpy ones that think they own the road.

I mean why not if they can pass the tests I guess.

However, if I was 18 would not think this would be a long term job. This feels like a job that is going to accelerate towards automation

I could barely afford to pay my teenagers’ car insurance, and you want to put them behind the wheels of big rigs? Pass

I’m all for it. I’m sure there will be a few accidents but long term this will be good. An 18 year old may lack experience but is physically more capable of quick reaction and alertness then an older driver. If the military lets 18 year olds drive equipment, tanks, planes I’m sure we can train them to drive a big rig

this sounds exactly like a Democrat solution to a Democrat problem.

Makes sense to have an apprentice program like other unionized trades

If 18 year olds could drive tanks in WWII, they can drive big rigs now.

Why not? I'm sure there are still a few 18 year olds who can do grown up stuff.

I think the long haul routes will be automated in the next 15 years but the short routes in busy cities will likely be traditionally driven for a long time

Only if their cell phones are locked in the glove compartment.

They can join the military but driving big trucks is too dangerous for some people

Not a good idea if the kids aren’t vetted properly, which they won’t. It will intertwined with SJ causes and many will slip through totally unworthy and unsafely driving giant killing machines on the country’s highway system.

This is the same as it is in every industry, they don’t want to deal with the older drivers who demand high rates.

They’ll flood the industry with younger cheaper drivers and lower the freight costs. Insurance premiums will go up though

They're not just giving them a full license after a few laps around the church parking lot. More about getting them into the training programs earlier. Think of 18-21 being like an extended learner's permit period, only way more heavily regulated.

18 year olds growing up in the 1930’s we’re helping their parents run a farm, run a small business, or already taking on adult responsibilities.

18 year olds today can’t boil water, most have never had a job, and don’t know much about the world other than what the internet tells them.

Make sure they have a stereo and a cell phone to distract them.

If your job is easily automated or easily replaced by cheaper labor, you didn’t properly plan out your career.
