There has been an influx of Islamic "refugees" from Myanmar in the last decade. Basically, the "Rohingya" have settled in pockets in Sri Lanka Dearborn, Michigan style. As a result, the tensions between the non-assimilating Muslims and everybody else is pretty high. As for their recently ended Civil War, I don't believe issues tied to it are applicable in this case, but it can't be ruled out. Time will tell.

I don't think this has any connection to the recent war. I certainly don't claim to be an expert on Sri Lanka after spending 4 weeks there, but we did speak to many different people there about just these things and it seemed they (Buddhist, Christian, and Moslem) just wanted to rebuild and move forward. But extremists exist in every society and today is a very symbolic day, so I guess the assholes used it to get attention.

Me too, my friend. Death toll just hit 115 in my friend's local Catholic church. Those are friends and neighbors who just wanted to celebrate Easter Mass with their families. It's different to see the news when you've been there and met the people who are now affected.
