United orders 200 Boeing 737 MAX planes in huge boost for Boeing

United Airlines early Tuesday announced a massive new airplane order that proved even bigger than rumored: firm contracts for 200 Boeing 737 MAXs, along with 70 Airbus A321neos.
The news is a huge boost for Boeing’s efforts to revive the MAX program, which suffered hundreds of order cancellations over the past couple of years.
It’s the largest single Boeing airplane order since American ordered 200 MAX planes in June 2011. American then was on the verge of giving Airbus an order for 460 A320neos, a damaging prospect for Boeing that abruptly forced the U.S. manufacturer to agree to launch the MAX so that it could split the order.
Tuesday’s deal bumps United’s total MAX order book to 380 jets, including previous orders for 180 MAXs, with 30 already delivered. The agreement also includes buying data packages for the airline’s Boeing 737 MAX training simulators to support its pilot training programs.

The new aircraft order consists of 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, 150 Boeing 737 MAX 10s and 70 Airbus A321neos, heavily skewed toward the larger single-aisle jets. United said these new aircraft will replace older, smaller mainline jets and at least 200 regional jets that seat only 50 passengers.
The largest MAX model, the MAX 10, took off on its first flight just 11 days ago, though it won’t be delivered to airlines until 2023 as Boeing takes that time to develop and certify additional safety enhancements to the MAX demanded by the European aviation regulator.
On a conference call, Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, said that between 2023 and 2026, the MAX 10 and A321neo will replace all of the airline’s 757-200s, which are variously configured to seat between about 140 and 175 passengers.
United’s willingness to wait for the MAX 10 is a big boost for that aircraft, which has registered relatively few sales compared to Airbus’s rival large single-aisle, the A321neo.

So United's business plan for sustainability is to dump the small narrow bodies in favor of the larger narrow bodies. More people less fuel burn per passenger equals more green.
Also an order like this, especially from a legacy carrier, is a clear indication that domestic travel is steadily recovering if not fully recovered already to pre-pandemic levels.
The jury's still out on long haul international travel.

United has 45 A350s on order with delivery scheduled for 2027.
I would be shocked if they actually take those planes. They've already deferred them a few times already this past decade. They already have a couple planes that can do those routes the A350 would do in the 787 and 777.

yeah, could be hanging on to them as a bargaining chip, we had a bunch of those on order/options and Airbus apparently wouldn't deal, Boeing came to us and practically gave us a bunch of 787s

are you able to say which airline you fly for? Don't mean to pry if you can't.

Amd in true "makes no sense" news of the financial world (I'm looking at you nearly defunct Gamestop and AMC)
Boeing's shares are down 1% today

Mostly medium haul order, but will replace United's original A320's many of which are over 25 years old.

they just put in an order for a bunch of those supersonic jets last week didn't they? I wonder if they're trying to manipulate their stock price for upcoming exec bonuses or expiring stock options, haven't even looked at the market today

it wasn't a 777? it was pre-Covid, at least for part of the year

Mostly medium haul order,
United 737-10 will replace the 757-200 on domestic routes.
A321 neo and XLR will replace the 757-200 on transatlantic routes with quite a few sprinkled in for domestic.
With that said, they're holding onto the 757-300 a little bit longer and United hasn't decided on what's going to replace it. Boeing needs to get their shite in gear and start the NMA because they're giving away that market entirely.

The 737-8 Max will replace the A320.
Also, in my personal opinion, good riddance. The a320, especially the CEO version is such a bland and completely ordinary looking plane.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The a320's nose gear drives me crazy with how crooked/titled looking like its about to collapse any moment now and the the front of the plane eats asphalt/concrete.

In other news, United will rebrand as "ValuJet"

Not flying on those planes. And I flew about 80,000 miles per year with UAL before the pandemic.
I’ve since lost most of status and I may as well switch.

With the insane, anal retentive and white on rice scrutiny Boeing has gotten with the MAX, it should be the safest plane in history and what's more is that they're going to take well over 2 years to test and certify their newest MAX model in the 737-10 before its delivered to airlines.
Boeing would collapse as a company if the MAX had another crash that's not pilot error, terrorism or poor maintenance from mechanics.

I have extensive knowledge of both, PhD level as a matter of fact, I stand by my statement, not that any of this matters

I'd suggest that they get moving on the MoM aircraft, then once that's released, get busy with the 737 replacement. Because it's been altered and stretched far beyond what it should be. They need a slightly wider plane with a taller landing gear to fit their larger high bypass turbofans and support the longer versions that carriers demand.
Basically they need an A320 that isn't a huge piece of shite.
Now that they have controlling interest in ERJ's commercial products, the Boeing lineup should be:
E-Jet (re-branded ERJ E175/190/195)
737 replacement
797 - middle of market
787
777
I think the 747 is dead outside of cargo duty.
