On May 19th, 1902, 26 miners working at the Fraterville Coal Mine in Tennessee, were trapped underground. They wrote these letters.

Those guys probably had an extremely limited education. Now compare their writings to the average Twitterer.

One of the best Bee Gees songs from before they turned gay was about a coal mine disaster
Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones

Was thinking the same. Not a single grammatical error.

I just find the following interesting:
1) No mention of “love”
2) Lots about heaven, no mention of Jesus.
Vague, much like the Protestantism of the time.

Pretty fascinating and horrifying at the same time. Minutes from death, this was their thoughts. I find them very composed.

I come from a coal mining family. These are hard to read and stay dry-eyed.
My father's occupation is listed on my birth cerificate as: Miner
