Do they serve any logistical function for modern humanity?

They help relieve itch in the crotchal region, for one.

Teeth and fingernails are the only real tools that come stock (besides *the* tool). I can't say that my fingernails helped me to reproduce, but life would be a bitch without them.

Fingernails are useful, toenails are not.
In fact, for runners toenails can be an inconvenience. Especially when they get bruised, turn blue/ black and fall off.

Spoken like someone who has never lost one.

If nothing else, they provide support for the unusually wide filter tips we have.

If we didn’t have them, picking something up is almost impossible, especially if you wouldn’t use a grasping motion.

What do you think would have happened if you didn't have a toenail when you did whatever to bruise it?

No, but I’m also assuming evolution will replace the sensitive tissue under the nail with regular skin

It's not that it's sensitive without a nail, it's that you notice how much you use them.

I use mine to pick my nose, open things, turn things, remove thorns and such, and on and on. Toenails are less useful, but they've saved my toes from worse stubbings and smashings on many occasions.

I can't think of a single thing that would be better or easier without nails.

Kork,

Yeah but we’ve invented tools that have replaced all those functions on a much more efficient basis.

As an example, I’ll contrast all the coke nail responders on this thread with simply “key bump”. Yeah you can grow a thumbnail that explicitly shows off your addiction or use a tool already in your pocket.

The evolution of humans is that we are more likely to use tools efficiently than our biological limitations. I guess we could use our palms to push metal nails into wood but we invented hammers.

Is there a use of fingernails or thumbnails that hasn’t been replaced by a more efficient tool?

The DNA recovered from under the fingernails has solved many murders and assaults, never mind the number of Vietnamese women who have made a living caring for them.
