To what extent is gun crime a mentality/mindset?

"Poverty" often is used to help explain away gun crimes and murder, which is pretty lazy in my opinion.

Personally I think that the biggest factor is the "live by the gun, die by the gun" mindset. If gun crime isn't a mindset, then why do men commit 90-something percent of gun crime in America, even though there are just as many women living in poverty as men?

Also, if it could just be explained away by poverty, there are more Hispanics in the United States living in poverty than there are African-Americans, yet there are three African-American murders for every one Hispanic murder.

It's the mindset of the weak minded, who can't let a show of "disrespect" go unpunished.

Gun crime isn't a mentality or mindset. It's a choice.

You typed out the magic word just then – disrespect. I was the only white boy in my 4th grade class and I couldn't count the number of times little black dudes would have a standoff or start scrapping because somebody disrespected somebody and nobody disrespects me.

They start hearing this messaging when they're little kids – it's all about respect, you can't let nobody disrespect you, you can't be a punk. And over time it leads to extreme insecurity and feelings that other people don't take you seriously enough and don't realize that you're a "man."

It's the reason why so many young black men don't smile and always look gassy and constipated in photos on social media. Must keep up appearances.

Then at some point guns become involved and they start listening to whack arse murder music, and the next thing you know there's a drive-by at somebody's momma's house.

I think IQ plays a factor.

Lower the IQ, the more a person is likely to act on emotion rather than reason

That's pretty vague and could probably mean at least 5 different things and I don't know which one you're going for, but thanks.

It's not poverty, whites across ALL income levels have a miniscule level of gun violence

The other thing is that 4-out-of-5 African-Americans don't live below the poverty line, yet every time an African-American dude carjacks somebody or murders somebody it's explained away that society failed him and nobody ever loved him and he was basically raised by wild dogs behind the projects.

In reality a lot of these dudes are just playing gangster and living out street boss fantasies even though they had big Christmases and always had the latest Playstation and Jordans.

Nearly 100 percent.

With the exceptions for crimes of passion, etc, most people who shoot others have no regard for human life.

I have long been of the belief that even attempted murder with a firearm, with potentially some narrow exceptions, should result in life in prison.

If you commit a crime with a firearm, even if you don’t use it, it should be a minimum 25 years.

Once you have crossed the line to shooting another person, you are not redeemable.

I work with kids who commit a lot of crimes with guns. There is no thought that goes into the commission of the crimes. They act on emotion, mostly anger and revenge. Getting caught is not a problem. The juvenile court judge will not dole out any severe consequences. Even when locked up they can still access cell phones, social media, and drugs. Even if they kill someone they will be out in a few months.

They only reason I haven't shot anyone is I don't feel like going to prison.

You misspelled "disrespeck." Gun crime is a product of people who don't have the mental capacity to control neither their emotions nor their temper. The easy access to stolen weapons takes this lack of mental maturity often to fatal levels.

It's not a mentality issue, it's a cold decision to shoot another human being. If in self defense, it's adrenaline kicking in, if intent to harm, it's cowardice.

I wonder if teaching young men how to fight might help. It used to be a pretty universal skill until zero-tolerance BS in schools.

If they knew how to use their fists maybe they wouldn’t feel the need to escalate.
