Times PIcayune to close printing operations, drop 100 jobs

per WWLTV
NEW ORLEANS – The Times-Picayune will move its printing and packaging operations to Mobile in the next 12 to 15 months, resulting in the loss of about 100 jobs, according to a story on the paper's web site, NOLA.com.
The article states that the move will not affect the size of the news and sales staffs at NOLA.com or the Times-Picayune.
The move comes after the announcement a couple of years ago of layoffs and the move from becoming a daily, home-delivered paper. The move caused a number of its journalists to move to competitors and allowed the Advocate to establish a daily, home-delivered paper in the city.
ACS Louisiana General Manager Ray Massett said that the move to the more updated facility at ACS Alabama in Mobile will help reduce cost and increase efficiencies, as well as add color in the pages.
"This is a sad day, as our colleagues who are losing their jobs have been loyal and hard-working, courageously seeing us through some difficult times," said Massett. "But the challenging economic realities of our business and the age of our plant means we must respond."
The move will also vacate the iconic Howard Avenue Times-Picayune building, Massett said the property may be donated to a non-profit in the community.

"The Times-Picayune and NOLA.com are here to stay"
NOLA.COM Link
EDIT: I guess his definition of "stay" is different than mine.

Heard the Advocate may not be far behind in dropping their print editions and going to internet only like NOLA.

Stunningly bad. I think their business model is to make lowball offers to new journalism grads until they find one desperate enough to take the job. They literally rely on commentors to fact-check and grammar check for them; I've seen several instances where a story is changed in response to a glaring error pointed out in the comments.
It's an absolute embarrassment but of course, you could see this coming a mile away as soon as they went 3 days a week.

So like what Gannett did to the Alex Town Talk and Monroe News Star, coverage of the LSU football games won't be in print until Monday. I subscribe to the Alex paper simply to look at a little local news and obits in the bathroom. They have little else as their paper is now printed in Lafayette, who gets to print their paper after the Alex paper is printed. If the Baton Rouge Advocate offered home delivery in Alex, I would drop the local paper in a heartbeat. Until then, I go get my copy of the Advocate (particularly on Sunday) from one of the newspaper machines.
