How does the OT feel about this?

quote:

The date whispers in Julie Leblanc’s mind when she is feeling most hopeless. It tugs at her thoughts when, for days, she forgets to eat, or doesn’t shower. She thinks about it more than she knows she should.

On March 17, assisted dying will become legal for Canadians with a mental disorder as their sole condition, and Ms. Leblanc can apply.

quote:

She has tried taking her own life before. But she worries now about suicide being painful, or ending up in a wheelchair, which happened to someone she knows. She has researched medical assistance in dying online. MAID sounds peaceful, she says. And also too tempting. How can it be, she wonders, that the same system meant to keep her alive might soon help her die?

When that option arrives in March, Canada will have one of the most liberal euthanasia laws in the world, joining only a few other countries that allow assisted dying for mental illness.

It will be the most controversial expansion of MAID since a Supreme Court ruling led the federal government to legalize euthanasia in 2016. At that time, MAID was only for patients with a foreseeable death, but Parliament – with Bill C-7 – removed that requirement in 2021.

I'm OK with it. If someone reaches the point where they want to end their life its going to happen...

Without getting into the nitty gritty of this specific law, which I'm sure is a very nuanced and legally complicated instrument, my point of view is if the patient is otherwise mentally competent enough to understand the consequence and has duly given their consent, I'm okay with it.

Have you ever seen a law that wasn't abused? Abortion was about rape and incest victims. How did that turn out?

Well as long as it’s safe, I’m ok with it.

People have the freedom of choice but this is a sad indictment on post modern culture.

Next step on the non-existent slippery slope is mainstream celebration of this choice by mentally ill people. I give it about 3.5 years before that’s the norm.

If it prevents just one back alley suicide, it’s worth it.

Gonna be a lot fewer liberals since mental illness is higher among them.

The question is where do they draw the line? Can they get rid of the suicide prevention hotline? How about suicide booths like in Futurama?

It should be noted that depression, true depression, fricks up your memory and disrupts judgment. Y

You can't trust a person with a legitimate depressive disorder to make a sound determination that ending their own life is the best option for them.

And then you've got the problems inherent of getting government involved in rubber stamping of suiciding people, or the inherent subectivity of what makes a 'life worth living.' They'd get sued to oblivion in an instant - and if they have immunity, then you have some unelected unanswerable person who can suicide people left and right.

A smart businessman would open a suicide booth next to a gender reassignment clinic.

Most people in the US with mental illness vote democrat, so I support helping them on their path to a peaceful afterlife.

Absolutely not because of where it goes next. Remember it's government we're talking about here.

Imagine someone's wife/husband/etc is severely depressed, commits suicide with the government's backing, and when the family fights it before and after they tell themto pound sand, because an 'expert evaluated them and determined it was okay for them to kill themselves.'

excuse me but what the frick?- and if they have immunity, then you have some unelected unanswerable person who can rubber stamp suicide left and right.

As I said earlier you can in no way shape or form trust a depressed person to make a sound judgment. And even someone who thinks they are 'totally alone' guarantee has someone out there who gives a shite.

I wouldn't even support it for schizophrenics since as much as people hate psychiatric medications - antipsychotics actually do work.

If people want to kill themselves there's already 1234890247 ways to do it, even in Canada. Making it acceptable is bad frickin news and is as much of a slippery slope as we just want to get married.

Any Democrat that is pro-abortion should put their money where their mouth is and try it. Lily from AT&T and the ladies from The View could go first.

Sounds like an easy way for your government to kill people...

Cue up the mental illness paperwork and they can put you to death.

You didn't write those letters you say? Well who would believe you are not suicidal, you're mental...
