re: This picture from an actual "Black Panther" screening

For a while it appeared we were becoming post racial but the past half dozen years or so have reversed the trend.
The rise of social media has something to do with it. It's so much easier to share information that is either completely false or out of context and cause discourse.
Just look at the picture that started this thread for example. Pre-social media, no one outside of that theater would ever know it happened. Now there's a tool that allows us to spread this photo in whatever context we please. It's no longer "this is a photo of a few people in a private screening".
It's now "look how black people are reacting to Black Panther".

Meh, it's a sign of how few problems we have as an American society. This stuff is front page news now because there is nothing to take its place. No major wars, no economic contraction, etc.
Wut? It's not like we've been fighting a war for 17 years or anything.
It's a byproduct of the drastic change in media catering to biases.

Spot on.

In every day life this shite never comes up in my experience. It's only online or in the news.
You'd think we were on the brink of an all-out race war listening to the media or social media
Meanwhile, all I'm seeing in my day to day is more and more mixed couples and kids running around.

Race was certainly a topic. Especially considering who was elected potus a decade ago.
It was a topic, but not the virulently divisive touchstone it's morphed into today. My facebook feed in 2008 was hardly as racially tinged as it is in 2018.
I'd use your example of Obama's election as confirmation of just how far we'd come on the topic.

This is the heart of the matter.

No way he’s serious, right?
I mean the best he can hope for is to go back to places that never existed in the first place?
Talk about a walking meme.

I get that, but my point still remains - it's fabricated tension.
If you turned off the news and social media, I'm pretty convinced you'd have a difficult time finding racial tension in your everyday life.

For anybody who was comparing that to a Nazi salute, point of reference:

It's become very real. People are very sucesptible to propaganda.

Agree 100%. Everyone's reacting to the extreme loonies on both sides as they go back and forth.
One of the social media groups I'm in is a combined group with both left and right wing posters. Predictably, it's a goddamn shite show. You have the same usual suspects posting left or right wing memes all day, and folks in the middle reacting to it.
Couple of guys in particular, one thinks Trump is basically the second coming of Jesus Christ (silly man, everyone knows that's Tim Tebow

The situation was only going to grow once everyone was given a platform to voice their opinion in a few characters. Throw in a number of flash in the pan events during the last decade and look at where we are.
I still don't think it's that extreme. But I do think some people are willing to say anything before thinking.

I live in a capital city with a very left leaning population. The tension has definitely stretched outside the pages of Facebook and twitter.

I guess it all depends on your perspective coming into the convo.
I feel like the bottom line is that people today care less about race than ever before, but thanks to social media/whatever other media we get the fringes on the subject pushed in our faces so often that you almost have to react to it or have an opinion on it.

Just remember if you are white don't take the best seats in the theater.
