Agreed.

Oh I'm just laughing at how overblown everything is regarding the movie. It's either the greatest thing ever put onscreen or an evil plot to promote racial division. It's insane.

Meanwhile I'm over here just waiting for my shite to finally drop: Incredibles 2

I figure if we white folks were only 12.5% of the population, we'd be more inclined to gravitate toward members of our own race as well.

That's a tidy little assumption you got there.

People on both sides have a ton of trouble with this concept.

It's complete assumption. But considering how I see most individuals that are minorities (Asian, black, middle-Eastern, etc) hanging out primarily with members of their own race, I figure it has some legs.

For a while it appeared we were becoming post racial but the past half dozen years or so have reversed the trend. I'll never really understand the belief that skin color makes you different or people of the same race necessarily share common values

This depends greatly upon the community in question. Socioeconomic status has a lot to do with it as well.

Little more to it than "We're both black so lets hang out."

That's certainly fair. I'd think that the racial divides are much more staunch the lower down the income chain you go.

Bingo. It's an archaic assumption that gets more absurd with every passing American generation tbh.

I always tell people the biggest difference between my wife and I isn't our skin color at all--it's the fact that she was public schooled and I was homeschooled. My being a military brat and her not being one is second. My coming from a large family and her being one of two kids is third. BIG jump to any other differentiating factors.

Aside from those, we had very similar upbringings (conservative, middle class, stable two-parent families, Christian, etc.).

Folks latch onto skin color because it's easy and lazy.

90s and early 00s were the golden years.

We notice skin color more now than any time since the 60s

To what extent it matters is debatable, but it does matter. People, much like animals, congregate with those who look like them. It's at a subconscious level, and I'm not suggesting it's racist, but it happens.

It's a damn MOVIE, people

No it isn't, it's a photo op, or rather a social media op. It doesn't matter that this is just a movie or that there actually have been other black super heroes, what matters is that people can post about watching a movie and the context of the movie scores social media points as if they posted a selfie of themselves serving food at the homeless shelter.

Was not as much of an issue a decade ago. Race is easily more of a issue now. Crying shame, too.

Nah I'm shielding myself from too much hype. I'm hyped enough. Just wanna see it unencumbered by prejudgment.

Meh, it's a sign of how few problems we have as an American society. This stuff is front page news now because there is nothing to take its place. No major wars, no economic contraction, etc.

In every day life this shite never comes up in my experience. It's only online or in the news.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Race was certainly a topic. Especially considering who was elected potus a decade ago.
