On 5 March 1936,[13][nb 1] the prototype (K5054), fitted with a fine-pitch propeller to give more power for takeoff, took off on its first flight from Eastleigh Aerodrome (later Southampton Airport). At the controls was Captain Joseph "Mutt" Summers, chief test pilot for Vickers, who is quoted as saying, "don't touch anything" on landing.[14][nb 2] This eight-minute flight[12] came four months after the maiden flight of the contemporary Hurricane.[16]

14,487 Hurricanes built versus the Spitfire, of which 20,351 were built.
That’s a bunch of aircraft.
Jerry found out.

Built this Spitfire a few years ago.
And this Hurricane around that same time.

It's crazy how fast planes and armor advanced from WW1 to WW2

Just think in 100 years people are going to be amazed that we had to have humans inside bombers.

True. Heck, its crazy how many advancements were made in the roughly 6 years of the second world War. There were still biplanes in service for many countries at the start of the war and the Germans had jets by the end.

The 100 octane gasoline that gave the Spitfire and extra boost in the Battle of Britain was developed and refined at the Standard Oil Refinery in Baton Rouge.

Actually once millenials take over we won’t have war anymore because we’re empathetic and learned from the boomers mistakes

Relax Gauch, there's a drone with your name on it being designed at Wuhan today.

Rolls Royce Merlin engine
Speaking of advancements, the Merlin went from 1,000 HP in the first production engines that went in Spitfires to over 2,000hp in the ones they produced for the de Havilland Hornet. (Even though the Hornet never made it to operational status by the end of the war, the Merlin's were upgraded for the Hornet to be a long range fighter in the Pacific)
