Long story short, I'm in management for a small company.

This morning, I had three emails from the owner ranting and raving about projects that they said hadn't been finished (the projects actually had been and were pretty minor anyway). The owner tries to be uninvolved for the majority of a normal week then pops in and raises hell here and there without even knowing what's going on in the day to day operation of the company.

Also, has a bad habit of "getting into it" with people and then shucking the mess off on us (or if it's our internal staff, me) to clean up.

This has been kind of an ongoing thing, we've talked about it and things get better for awhile then it's the same thing again. After today, I'm just done with it.

I'm supposed to have a meeting with the owner Monday to "lay out a plan for staff accountability" but thinking about just quitting although I have nothing else lined up right now.

Sorry, just needed to vent

I guess it depends on how much money you have to live on should you decide to quit Monday and do you have health insurance to carry you over should you quit. Are you married? Does spouse work?

But yea i would be looking for jobs today/Sunday and fuk that place u work for.

I’m planning to do the same tomorrow, very similar situation and it’s been a long time coming. Whenever the owner is having a bad day, I have a bad day. shite isn’t worth it. Dude makes more money than every other employee combined and feels personally insulted if people aren’t there from 8-6 working through lunch in case he wants to show up and bitch about something.

People like this take a lot out of you. Yes, it’s better to line up a job before leaving for several reasons. But don’t let the fear of uncertainty benefit your boss, they don’t deserve it. You may wind up making a bad decision on your next move just to get out. Or you may wait to find something perfect and then feel stuck. Having to associate with shitty toxic people follows you home.

You have to do what’s right for you, and if that means leaving with no plan, it’s not that big of a deal. Now this is coming from a guy that has a hard time saying frick it. In my situation, I want to take my job seriously and don’t need to be told how to do it, but has devolved into pacifying a guy that creates problems in his own company and refuses to take accountability for any real problems even though they ultimately come from him taking profits over hiring more staff for redundancies and his own micromanagement. I’m shrinking professionally and it’s time to cut it off.

It's baffling to me, you have to be an absolute moron to treat your people shitty with the labor market the way it is right now.

People are stupid. Especially right now.

I work for a company that has had a pension for most of its existence until about ten years ago. The problem is all the people in management still think they can treat people like shite and expect them to take it because of that pretty big reason to stay. And it’s causing a lot of good quality people to leave.

You're gonna have to call your own "special-private meeting" with the owner and explain YOUR terms going forward.

(write down your script...stick to you guns.)

I was let go from a job last year with a similar manager. I wouldn’t pull the trigger and quit because I was comfortable having a job and only looked for new jobs half-heartedly because I would convince myself “it’s not that bad”. I should have quit years before. But being let go made me get out there and look. A month later I had a better job with better everything (pay, benefits, work/life balance). Would have never looked gotten it if I wasn’t pushed.

There's always that voice in my head that's like "the grass isn't always greener somewhere else." There is that fear that you're going to go somewhere else and be in a similarly crappy situation.

So I totally understand, it's tough to figure out whether it's really "that bad" and whether you're actually going to put yourself in a better position when you leave.

This is probably one of the worst traits of someone in management/ownership. Having absolutely 0 clue what’s going on day to day, but throwing a fit anyway because things don’t meet your made up expectations. I always figure it’s cause they’re embarrassed they actually are idiots so they take it out on everyone below them to portray like they do.

Don’t get how people like that even have friends or people willing to put up with them at all.

Never quit your job until you have another job.

Get a better job first then quit.

Don't quit your job until you have something else lined up.
Stress is a killer but if you want real stress find yourself unemployed and your savings dwindling away with no health insurance only to realize what you want may not be available. Much easier to quit a job than to find one. The folks on here telling you to quit without a back-up aren't going to take care of your bills.

I disagree with waiting until you have another job lined up… that’s if you can afford it.

A reset for a few weeks or a few months might be just what you need. Do some things you want. Got kids? Hang out with them. Wanna travel? Hit the road.

The job market is hot as a firecracker right now. You’ll be employed quickly.

You can’t get time back. Don’t spend it being miserable. I did for longer than I care and I absolutely regret it.

Just my .02.

typical ignorant boss who thinks his "job" is to light a fire under his workers to keep them focused when in truth he just disrupts and slows progress in the workplace.

go in monday and tell him as far as you are concerned everything in the workplace is fine except when he disrupts things and leave it at that. then from now on do only minimum effort you have to and go get another job before quitting. nothing will save the situation you are in

If that is the purpose of this, then disregard.

If you want constructive criticism/help:

1. Write down on a sticky note somewhere you can see it that says, "He's the boss. I work for him."

2. The two of you, in particular, have a communication problem -

quote:

The owner tries to be uninvolved for the majority of a normal week then pops in and raises hell here and there without even knowing what's going on in the day to day operation of the company.

If the two of you fix this, I think your problems largely go away. The two of you need to figure what he needs/wants to know and feed him that during the week. A common operating picture is key for him to make executive decisions and for you to execute them in accordance with his wishes.

3.

Also, has a bad habit of "getting into it" with people and then shucking the mess off on us (or if it's our internal staff, me) to clean up.

I'm curious about this. Is he being unreasonable? Or is he being inconsistent? Either way, that's something the 2 of you need to work on. If he is doing this with customers/clients, there really isn't much you can do about it (I guess you can quit - ). If it is with non-management staff, then, again, he should be reminded that all of that should go through the management team. It is why he hired you all and why you have jobs.

4.

I'm supposed to have a meeting with the owner Monday to "lay out a plan for staff accountability"

This is a great opportunity to address all these issues, review/revise the company communication/accountability policies, manual and training.

thinking about just quitting

Obviously, this is way easier than fixing problems, for sure. I'm not being judgmental. I've quit several jobs. Some of the best days of my life.

quote:

although I have nothing else lined up right now.

Just get it fixed. The guy will probable appreciate all the thought you've put into this. And, while you're doing all this, look in the mirror and talk to that guy about what HE can do better, as well. It is not 100% on the boss, I can guarantee you that.

Not buying the whole story. No way he has no clue a project is finished, that he is upset wasn't.
Sounds like they are late or barely making deadlines.

When you're an owner, there are no minor projects.

Talk to him on the simple issues of why there seems to be a communication breakdown. Maybe take 5 minutes every other day to email him a progress report.

Seems simple

Do you have regular 1:1s with owner (where you would want to keep him posted and, if possible, get him focused on what is on horizon, input in advance, during, and any look-backs/lesson's learned). Simple way of managing upward and helping him to lead when it sounds like he is not today.

Good luck!
