Most people think of Columbine as the first but it goes back way before that.

The Luby's shooting was a mass shooting that took place on October 16, 1991, at a Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas. The perpetrator, George Hennard, drove his pickup truck through the front window of the restaurant. He shot and killed 23 people, and wounded 27 others. He had a brief shootout with police, refused their orders to surrender, and fatally shot himself.

Hennard then began firing from inside the truck while holding Glock 17 and Ruger P89 pistols;

He killed 23 people with only pistols. We simply must ban ARs.

The San Ysidro McDonald's massacre was an act of mass murder which occurred at a McDonald's restaurant in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego, California, on July 18, 1984. The perpetrator, 41-year-old James Huberty, fatally shot 21 people and wounded 19 others before being killed by a police sniper approximately 77 minutes after he had first opened fire.

At the time, the massacre was the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in U.S. history, being surpassed seven years later by the Luby's shooting.

And you remember it because it was so out of the norm. You must admit that there are a hell of a lot more now. I find it hard to keep track of them all.

How about non U.S. countries? Been a historical trend of mass shootings for long time in other countries?

There are very few elementary school massacres in all of history. It is it’s own category—these hit a little different than the Luby’s crowd, which is on the other end of time.

The first mass shooting as we understand them today was actually Charles Whitman on the University of Texas campus in 1966. After killing his wife and mother, Whitman drove to UT-Austin, climbed to the top of the Texas Tower, and began to snipe people who were walking down below. In all, he killed 17 people and wounded another 31 before Austin PD finally were able to breach the roof of the tower and take him out. That incident is almost solely responsible for the creation of SWAT teams.

The death toll might have been much worse had it not been for Austin's citizenry who came out en masse with rifles of their own and pinned him down long enough for police to get to him.

Explosives were used in this massacre. Just goes to show that if a psycho decides he wants to kill a lot of people he will find a way

The Cleveland Elementary School shooting is a school shooting that took place on January 29, 1979, at a public elementary school in San Diego, California, United States. The principal and a custodian were killed; eight children and police officer Robert Robb were injured. A 16-year-old girl, Brenda Spencer, who lived in a house across the street from the school, was convicted of the shootings.
Asked why she did it, Spencer said because she hates Monday's.

It is also an extremely unique case. He gained access to the building doing electrical work, thus he was afforded time necessary to rig it up with explosives. Also, it wasn’t just some social reject twisted frick like these elementary school shooters of today. The guy was a poor farmer who was stretched thin, driven to the brink of insanity as a result of losing his farmstead because of new taxes levied to fund the school. He had a very real motive for targeting and destroying the school, even if his logic was deranged and flawed in accepting the kids as collateral damage.
