Yep. Out of our 14 employees, 8 have at least 15 years with us. That doesn’t happen if you are a shitty employer
Not every business wants a long term workforce. McDonlads doesn’t exist to make professional line cooks or cashiers

Wages weren't too low before the pandemic. "Supply and demand" will work just fine if the government stops sending people the equivalent of $15/hr.
Anyone besides me notice that's exactly what the govt wants the minimum wage to be? Yeah, I think they have a plan. Make all businesses out there pay at least $15 before they cut off the govt extra money.

I believe you're going to be proven wrong on this note
A lot of people will refuse to work for low wages now
And honestly that's not a terrible thing
Ok, they can refuse to work. However, my tax dollars should not subsidize them. That's the real issue. You choose to not work at a low paying job? Ok, but don't expect me to pay.
People who work hard don't stay in the entry level job forever. They get raises. They get experience and apply for better jobs. It's entry level for a reason!

Very similar experiences. My wife and I have been traveling around the country for the past three months. Every place we’ve been from California, Oregon, to Montana, to Wyoming, to Arizona is experiencing the same staffing shortages.
Hell, we spent four nights at a luxury ranch in Wyoming. Five-star resort. Even they can’t find employees, and they have a pretty much unlimited budget.
I’ve been to multiple restaurants that are still doing 50% seating capacity, not because it’s a government mandate, but because they simply don’t have the front of house or back of house staff necessary for 100% capacity. Most everywhere we’ve been it would be recommendable to get reservations for dinner. Even if the place isn’t that nice. Many of them simply cannot seat walkins.
We’ve seen lots of fast food places that are only allowing drive-through because they don’t have enough staff to work the lobby.
I played golf at Bandon Dunes. They can’t find enough caddies.
It’s affecting every part of the service industry from the top of the line to the bottom of the barrel.

My youngest went looking for a job and literally couldn’t get one. I guess people aren’t that hard up.
Your kid is bullshitting you. My sister-in-law who is in college just got a job at the beach working the front desk at a condo. They gave her $1000 just to start.

You don't need 20 people to work for McDonalds to have it running efficiently.
Even for a very busy one you would only need 7 people tops.
1 Window 1 register
2 Line/prep
1 Fryer/grill
1 Window 2 expo
1 Front register
1 Manager to do front expo and help stations that need it
Anymore and they would just start getting in the way of each other. They will run one pretty effectively with only 3 people when they automate the payment and order process. Easy to pay 15 an hour at that point.
When people demand high minimum wages they are really saying "Automate my job!". They just don't know it.

quote:Thanks Uncle, I never realized that's what was going on when I see the last few remnants of maskers in public.
Also, if you notice, one demographic in particular continues to wear masks everyday. That is a directive from their leadership (i.e. Reverends) that want them to continue to push the narrative that “life is not normal” and that some people will need prolonged additional benefits in these “unprecedented times”. It doesn’t financially benefit these “local leaders” if everyone perception-wise thinks the Covid issue is behind us and additional benefits should cease (which impact their tithes).

I went with her. She’s 15, so that was prob the issue but you’d think if these places were truly hard hit that wouldn’t matter so much.

It's so bad here that they will pay a dishwasher $19 an hour and provide housing assistance.
Oh no the dishwasher who’s probably busting his arse is making good money and has a nice place to live!

Well she still has to have 5 years experience for an entry level job.

But Universal Basic Income!!
UBI is a great idea. In this example, it empowers labor force to not take shite jobs for shite pay and no benefits.
What we are seeing is people being given an option to not allow themselves to be crushed by the boot of poverty and big corporations. I applaud it.

Right now is the prime opportunity to bust your arse and make a name for yourself with the boss. When no one else wants to work hard and take the lead, be that person. It eventually pays off.

Basically any job paying under $20 an hour is having trouble hiring.
Why work when you can get free benefits equal to $14/ hour and sit on your arse

Dining rooms at fast food places are closed because of staff shortages, not Covid.

Some of those shot jobs for shite pay are required for basic society to function, like food processing and packaging.

While I understand you’re talking about Tyson chicken and McDonald’s, it’s also crushing independent restaurants, small retail stores, and virtually any company reliant upon unskilled manual labor.
Without this test run in UBI, the value these people bring is very low and their pay reflected that, however the jobs were still necessary, just easy to do. Now with this mini version of UBI, we are seeing prices go up because everyone now has a base income regardless of skill and value.
