your definition and my definition of a "decent living" must not be the same. i have seen what living in government housing looks like, it isn't the lap of luxury i'll tell you that

The government was already paying them those things too though, the unemployment money is on top of all of that

They local Mickey D's had one person show up the other day. I felt bad for them. But they ran the restaurant like normal, just took about 15 minutes per order.

That tells me 2 things:

1. Most people fricking suck
2. You don't need 20 people to work for McDonalds to have it running efficiently.

$25/hr with benefits for someone straight out of high school for a very low skilled job is pretty damn good pay IMO. Yet myself and many of my colleagues are getting zero interest. 18 months ago I would have had my door broke down with applicants.

It’s a fricking easy job. Suck spit, make sure instruments get cleaned and sterilized, and only have to show up 4 days a week.

I refuse to pay more than that. I’ll just keep doing it myself.

Where are you located? I know a college graduate who will take that job.

Businesses are not paying enough. Everything that matters has drastically increased in price. Food, housing and energy have skyrocketed since the previous and current administrations decided it was a good idea to make money out of thin air. Businesses need to pay more to get staffed. The businesses that are paying more have much better staffing.

every sign i see with help wanted is offering $15-20/hour.

that's triple what the pay was in 2000 when i started working at pizza hut.

the problem is that $15/hour is probably equivalent to what most people are getting in UE. so i can go to work and maybe make a few bucks an hour more, or not go to work and make about the same to "not take a toll on me or so that i can pursue what i really want to do."

i also like that all the arguments being made against ending the UE bennies, are making the argument against people who ARE paying more than MW and the welfare is coming from those people.

it's a perfect kafka trap

"you should pay more and they'd come to work."

"i am paying more."

"obviously it must suck to work for you or you don't have enough benefits."

"i'm offering health care"

"people just don't want to work for you."

it's hard to compete with somebody who can print money from our future taxes, then they go around and pay for their benefits anyways with more of our taxes.

i know it's not always that cut and dry, but all the arguments in this thread that are seemingly in favor of this current trend are writing checks all of us have to cash.

I don't think I've ever seen that many employees at one of their stores at one time

Our definitions don’t matter, it’s the ones not working with the decision to make

Notably you didn't mention that your business was great for your employees.

Great small businesses have great employees that they take care of. We consider our employees as family and treat them as such.

To be fair, Chik-Fil-A also offers their employees (even the kids they have their working) legitimate upward mobility. They offer scholarship opportunities (and not just some University of Phoenix bullshite) and generally treat their employees like human beings. A friend of mine's older brother started out working for Chik-Fil-A as just a cashier and got into their program where you can end up with a franchise. Now he owns multiple ones around Indy.

They've also always paid well even for their lower end positions.

There was an article last week on the labor shortage, particularly in the hotel and restaurant industry. Seems a lot of restaurant workers felt incredibly better while not working last year and realized the toll restaurant work took on their bodies and many have decided to pursue other careers.

Yeah I’m sure it is based more on feels than it is on the federal subsidy currently in place for those not working.

Think about what you are saying.

Problem: there is a low skilled labor shortage

Explanation 1: these laborers are getting a federal subsidy in most states if they are not working

Explanation 2: these laborers found more fulfilling work, during a pandemic, and sacrificed the benefits of explanation 1.

And you seriously think explanation 2 is more likely than 1.

I am excited for mid-September when the CNNs and USATodays of the world start reporting sob stories spotlighting people that are in awful shape because they didn’t use the year of “no rent”/“extra benefits” to put them in a better position but instead started living beyond their means….

Also, if you notice, one demographic in particular continues to wear masks everyday. That is a directive from their leadership (i.e. Reverends) that want them to continue to push the narrative that “life is not normal” and that some people will need prolonged additional benefits in these “unprecedented times”. It doesn’t financially benefit these “local leaders” if everyone perception-wise thinks the Covid issue is behind us and additional benefits should cease (which impact their tithes).

Yep. Out of our 14 employees, 8 have at least 15 years with us. That doesn’t happen if you are a shitty employer

It's so bad here that they will pay a dishwasher $19 an hour and provide housing assistance.
