For all the nuclear advocates. Should the US amp up their uranium mining?

quote:

In 2021, owners and operators of commercial nuclear power reactors bought 46.7 million pounds (lb) U3O8 equivalent (U3O8e) at an average price of $33.91/lb U3O8e. Purchase volume in 2020 was only slightly higher than in 2021, although the purchase price was slightly lower—48.9 million pounds at an average price of $33.27/lb U3O8e. Most of uranium purchased in the United States in 2021 was imported (95%), which is typical under conditions of low domestic uranium production. Kazakhstan was the top source for uranium in 2021, accounting for 35% of total U.S. uranium purchases, followed by Canada at 15% and Australia at 14%.

We could get more from Canada if we wanted. It’s cheaper to get it there than mine here.

Did the mines near Farmington NM play out, or shut down for economics?

Curious to know this too. From the article.

quote:

By most measures, production of uranium concentrate (U3O8) remained at or near all-time lows in the United States during 2021, at 21,000 pounds, which is less than 1% of the post-2000 production high of 4.9 million pounds U3O8 in 2014.

I’m ignorant but seems smart to use up a finite resource from others before you use up ours.

Buy the good uranium miner stocks hand over fist. You will all thank me in 2024-25 when your home mortgages are paid off, bought RVs, boats, luxury cars and 2nd or 3rd homes on the cheap after the deflationary collapse of assets.

If it’s like other resources such as coal, copper, etc, this is primarily due to (1) union labor cost and (2) government regulations.

Could it have anything to do with open mining? I remember Canada having lots of open mines.

Any advice on individual miners versus ETFs for your OT colleagues?

URA vs URNM?

Both are excellent Uranium ETF's. The recent drops aren't due to Uranium weakness, but the Fed's recent monetary tightening policies. Folks are going to regret picking up one or both within 1-2 years.

URA's all time high is $125+ and it's at $21+ now.
URNM's all time high is $104+ and it's at $69+ now. I own URA.

Individual Uranium miners I own are UEC, DNN, UUUU and a few penny stocks with high rewards if the market goes where I know it's going.

No problem for me, it is some pretty nasty stuff to deal with, let someone else deal with the side effects of uranium mining.

Has the part of the uranium one deal that involved US mining been reversed?
