The US government has accidentally lost 32 nuclear weapons since 1950 many never recovered
BROKEN ARROW: AMERICA’S LOST NUCLEAR WEAPONS

quote:

“Broken Arrow” is the military’s code word for an accident involving a nuclear weapon. Since 1950, there have been almost three dozen acknowledged “Broken Arrow” incidents. Six times, the US has lost a nuclear weapon in an accident that it was unable to recover, including a Navy plane that crashed into Puget Sound with a nuclear depth charge, and an attack plane that rolled off a carrier near Japan and sank with its B43 nuclear bomb. Several times, nuclear weapons have been dropped or accidentally released near American cities. In many of these, the nuclear weapon’s conventional explosives actually detonated, and only the bomb’s safety precautions prevented a nuclear explosion.

This is the government equivalent of “losing all our guns in a boating accident”.

We'll, that's a lot of fun and not frightening at all.

Is real life imitating fiction or are these "stories" not as far fetched as they want us to believe?

I'm going to dust my metal detector off and go find one of these. Then I'll secede and form my own micronation dictatorship and be a nuclear power.

I'll even load it up on my trailer and parade it around with the lawn mower on "Victory Day."

The ones lost at sea don’t scare me too much

This terrifies me.

B52 went down over NC back in like the 60's I think. They dropped their two nukes. One nuke's parachute deployed leading it to land safely and be located. The other nuke's parachute malfunctioned causing it to plunge into a swamp at 700 mph and break apart. They recovered several components of the nuke but not the actual nuke itself because of equipment sinking. On that particular Nuke, there were 4 safety devices that prevent detonation. The impact caused 3 of the 4 safety devices to deactivate. One more and a large part of North Carolina would still be uninhabitable.

Read "Command and Control". There have been numerous times where these mishaps almost caused an accidental explosion. Some on the CONUS.

I don't know what's scarier, losing nuclear weapons, or that it happens so often there's actually a term for it.

re: The US government has accidentally lost 32 nuclear weapons since 1950 many never recovered
quote:

The plane carried a Mark Four nuclear weapon, which was made with uranium but had a core of lead. The captain made the decision to jettison the bomb off the Canadian coast, after setting the weapon to airburst at 3000 feet. The bomb vanished in a conventional explosion, which rained uranium down onto the coast. The pilot then changed course back over land, where 16 crew members bailed out around midnight near Princess Royale Island. The plane itself flew on into the dark using auto-pilot. The bomber ultimately crashed into a mountainside in Northern BC. By this point, Strategic Command knew that they had lost a plane and a nuclear weapon, and the search was on. Twelve of the bomber’s crew were found alive. The bomber itself was only found in 1953 on the slopes of Mount Kologet. To this day, how the plane was found 200 miles from where the crew jumped, at a higher elevation, and in the opposite direction to that set on autopilot, remains a mystery.

There's commemorative markers near Smithers, in West Central BC.

Check with John Travolta and Christian Slater. They may have information on their whereabouts.
